Free For All Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Just heard (from Bobby Watson) that bassist Charles Fambrough passed away today. I haven't heard any details beyond that. Sad news. Not a good start to 2011. Quote
brownie Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 That is damn sad! Notice at the Jassed website. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 This is shocking news to start the year - RIP, way way too young. A fine and very solid bassist, I think the first time I saw him was with Blakey (as a real youngster) and then in later years with his own groups. This hasn't been a very good run of jazz-related news of late.. Quote
Chalupa Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 The Philly Jazz scene took a lot of hits in 2010. 2011 is not starting off in a good way. RIP.http://jazztimes.com/articles/27002-jazz-bassist-charles-fambrough-dies Quote
mikeweil Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Yes, this really sucks ... a real solid bass player with a nice, big sound. R.I.P. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 It's become a regular occurrence with the passing of musicians. RIP Charles. He couldn't have been past 55 or 60. Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 The first two jazz performances I attended were by the Gary Burton Quartet and McCoy Tyner's band, both around 1976; I'm no longer sure which was the first. Fambrough and Eric Gravatt were Tyner's rhythm section, and I still remember how strong and intense they were. RIP. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Sad news but it sounds like he had a very rough time for several years as his illnesses progressed. I'll spin Blues at Bradley's in his memory. Quote

Hot Ptah Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I also saw Charles Fambrough with McCoy Tyner, with Eric Gravatt as the drummer. It was a very powerful rhythm section. I saw him with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, in the Bobby Watson era. I remember Art introducing Charles by saying "Charles was with McCoy Tyner, but he is with us now, because he wanted to play some....JAZZ!!!" I thought that was a very odd comment. Charles Fambrough's "Zanzibar Blue" album under his own name is particularly excellent, I think. It is a beautiful, memorable album. Quote
