chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) 1st up is vol 5. in a series of CROWN BOX SETS. all come on nice red vinyl. there all musicals. vol 5 is 'around the world in 80 days' for lp 1, lp 2= gigi, lp 3= south pacific. other volumes mix it up slightly but musicals still are paramount. one interesting looking one is vol 3, 'symphony in stereo'- which incl. symphony of the golden west (buddy bregman presents), symphony of the sea & symphony of the blues. pic next up, is this. the split second i picked this record up. i immidiatly thought "SOMETHINGS NOT RIGHT WITH THIS................" it was 1) the fonts, and 2) the fact i had never heard of the record label. the combination of the front type plus the fact the label was a complete mystery, prompted me to pull the record out....again, the font was familar but no mentio of origin on the label............but then on the lower inner part of the foldout.........there it was............ CONTESSA RECORDS/ 5810 SO. NORMANDIE AVE., LOS ANGELES, CALIF. 90044! I HAD A FEELING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this crown subsidary seems to focus on real awesome nice gatefold jackets! also the vinyl looks much better than usual crown, id have to say. lets take a look at some pics: inner gatefold! u can also see in this pic another lp i got last night! can anyone determine which pressing it is? Teasing the Korean Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 Chewy, do you have the Crown albums "Bongo Madness" by Don Ralke and/or "Exotic Percussion" by Milt Raskin? I would love to find a box set of these two albums, combined with, of course the Latin Jazz All-Stars' "Jazz Heat, Bongo Beat," arguably the greatest album ever made. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 19, 2011 Author Report Posted February 19, 2011 i dont have the original milt raskin issue but i think the lp on kimberly i have is the same album + extra overdubbed percussion. i dont remember if i have bongo madness, but i got les baxter's bongo album on capitol last night. and yes of course i have jazz heat bongo beat, although i think i might have a canadian pressing...... Teasing the Korean Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 The Milt Raskin album also came out under the title "Kapu" - Can't remember offhand if that was on Crown or not. Which Les Baxter - Skins or Teen Drums? Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 "Skins" is mostly percussion, so depending on where you're coming from, that could be good or bad. The standout track is "Reverberasia," which sounds like Sun Ra - I kid you not. "Teen Drums" is worth getting - It is more like a beatnik bongo record, with Plas Johnson on tenor. Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted December 9, 2013 Report Posted December 9, 2013 Who the fuck cares? I want to hear a disco-fied version of the Kenny Rogers hit "Lucille" You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille With four hungry children and a crop in the field  The mere thought of having to hear a discoed/funked-up version of THAT makes me shudder! That Kenny Rogers song was unbearable enough as it was, but THAT ... OTOH, considering the lyrics, if it had been sung with a croaky, gravelly voice in a low-down in-the-gutter country blues mood to the accompaniment of a lone acoustic guitar, now that would have been something ... But certainly not marketable to THAT target market in the 70s ... But nah, those cash-in-on-the-hit parade cover version compilations done by no-name artists really were all over the place (by ANY budget label) in the 70s, so what's the deal? Listening to some of those 50s BELL cover versions of chart hits can be fun (and some actually are pretty nice and lend a new tiwst to the song) but that 70s disco stuff? Shudder .... The 7700 series of Modern/RPM/Kent reissues are a bit more satisfying for 70s United releases after all. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 9, 2013 Report Posted December 9, 2013 Thanks for putting up that obit, Chewy. MG Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 Anyway, in the '75-'77 era I was buying Bihari product as a wholesaler. IIRC the sales manage was a hefty guy named Bob Harrington. I probably have his card somewhere. Quote
