mjzee Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 On the Mosaic "Complete Verve Johnny Hodges Small Group Sessions 1956-61," one of the albums was "Hodges By Hodges." Can anyone furnish a link to a scan of the original cover? Much thanks in advance. Quote

The albums listed are: Johnny Hodges and His Little Band Ellingtonia '56 Duke's in Bed The Big Sound Side by Side Not So Dukish Blues-A-Plenty The Smooth One (A 2fer LP of previously unreleased material) Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Hmm. Don't know that one. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Me neither. But looking around about Hodges I found this cool picture that doesn't even have Rabbit in it. Quote
marcello Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 (edited) It seems that session was never released at the time. It was issued on LP eventually (with another session in 1979), but not on cd: Tracklisting / Additional Info: 1. First Klass (C'mon Home) 2. Second Klass 3. Straight Back 4. Steerage 5. Third Klass 6. Meet The Frog 7. Nite Life 8. My Melancholy Baby 9. Lotus Blossom 10. Free For All 11. I Told You So 12. Starting With You (I'm Through) 13. The Hare 14. The Things You Miss 15. Wiggle Awhile 16. Br'Rabbit 17. Get Ready 18. Peaches 19. Hygiene The music from both of those sessions are in the Mosaic box. Blog Review Edited September 30, 2011 by marcello Quote
jazzbo Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Never saw that cover, and it's a nice one. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Bought that set back in the day. Delighted to get 2 new Hodges sessions. Quote

Never saw this picture before. When Giants walked the Earth.... Was that the "Jazz Party" session when Dizzy and Jimmy Rushing sat in? LOVE any Hodges thread on this forum. One of the most beautiful, soulful tones in music...ever. A blues master too. Edited September 30, 2011 by Jazz Nut Quote
jazzbo Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Yes, pretty sure that was a photo from the Jazz Party recording session. Here's another. Quote
mjzee Posted September 30, 2011 Author Report Posted September 30, 2011 As per the Mosaic booklet, "Note: These nine selections were initially scheduled to be issued as HODGES BY HODGES Verve V6-8391." So I guess a cover was never released. Oh well. Tracks are 11 - 19 in Marcello's post. Shorty Baker, Ray Nance (tp), Lawrence Brown, Booty Wood (tb), Johnny Hodges (as), Jimmy Hamilton (cl, ts), Jimmy Jones (p), Aaron Bell (b), Sam Woodyard (d). Nola Studios, NYC, September 8, 1960 (and maybe Sept 9). Arrangements by Mercer Ellington, Jimmy Hamilton, Gerald Wilson, and John Sanders. Quote

I think they were West Coast sessions with Hodges and Mel Lewis on drums. It's listed on the discography in the back of the booklet. Not sure of the exact specifics. Perhaps the masters were destroyed. A pity and a shame. Yes, pretty sure that was a photo from the Jazz Party recording session. Here's another. Thanks for the pictures Jazzbo! :tup Quote
gmonahan Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 I also loved the photos! I've written Mosaic a few times begging them to finish out the Hodges Verve sessions through the 60s. He did some great stuff during that decade. Yet *another* Mosaic box to wish for! gregmo Quote
brownie Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 That 'A Smooth One' twofer was also released in France by ¨Polydor/Verve in 1979 with the same cover that Marcello posted. Discarded it when the Mosaic box came out much later! Quote
