colinmce
Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but this record is tremendous. It's Neneh Cherry (one-time pop star and Don's stepdaughter) backed by The Thing: Mats Gustafsson, Paal Nilssen-Love and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten. This is the kind of collaboration that just doesn't happen enough; it's all very natural and thrilling. Nothing about it is "this + jazz", it's a total group effort. The music includes titles by Don Cherry, The Stooges, MF Doom, Suicide and Ornette.

king ubu
I've heard a pair of tracks - very interesting, to say the least. Not sure how well I can deal with Neneh's voice, though.

BFrank
Impressive review in the NY Times today. Gonna have to get this one! Patti Smith and Ravi Coltrane albums (reviewed here) sound like keepers, too.
king ubu
The Patti Smith is good! But I need to give it some more time to come to a valid judgement, only gave it two spins so far (got the book edition with photos from the JLG filming on ... "Costa Concordia", of all ocean crappers - it also has one more tune, I think)

BFrank
Finally getting around to listening to this. I can't think of ANYone who is doing (or could do) music remotely like this. A unique mixture of hip vocal performances over a backdrop of 60s/70s-era progressive/outside jazz. Gotta be one of the most outrageous albums of the year and could be appreciated by pretty much anyone on this board. One thing's for sure - it's NOT commercial. How about Kahil El Zabar and the ethnics? i have only heard the Cherry Thing once when it was available on NPR but for me it's at least remotely similar. BFrank
Good one, Uli. You might be onto something there. Any other singers doing this from a vocal perspective?
