brownie Posted October 5, 2012 Report Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) A giant exhibition on Django Reinhardt opens this week at the Paris Cité de la Musique. It was directed by former O. member Vincent Bessières. If it is as good as his 2009-2010 'We Want Miles' show, it will be a must-see exhibition. A preview (in french): The show will be on view at the Cité de la Musique until January 23, 2013. Edited October 5, 2012 by brownie Quote
EKE BBB Posted October 5, 2012 Report Posted October 5, 2012 :tup I must go to Paris again before the closing date! Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted October 5, 2012 Report Posted October 5, 2012 Same here, but I doubt that I will be able to ... Thanks at any rate, Brownie, for making us aware of this! Quote
fasstrack Posted October 6, 2012 Report Posted October 6, 2012 Same here, but I doubt that I will be able to ... Thanks at any rate, Brownie, for making us aware of this! Me three! Would love to, but can't see how I'd get to Paris. Never been there actually. If anyone gets to NY there's a nice permanent exhibit at JALC. Not on that level but you can sit in a booth and watch and hear histories of many greats, including Django and Charlie Christian. It's a nice, free respite from the street and one's worries to get down with a little jazz. Forgot what they call it. You can't miss it though. Right off the elevator on the 6th floor. Quote
gmonahan Posted October 7, 2012 Report Posted October 7, 2012 Because I'm in the city for a few more days, I was able to go on opening day yesterday. It was a very nice exposition--lots of photos, artifacts, and most importantly, listening stations and booths for hearing the great guitarist in a variety of contexts. Also good background on his own ethnicity and the view of it in France at the time. Could perhaps have discussed some of the more colorful aspects of his personal life--he was apparently quite the character--and though it discussed his activities in Paris during the Occupation, I wouldn't have minded more on that, but it was still a fine exposition. gregmo Quote
fasstrack Posted October 8, 2012 Report Posted October 8, 2012 Nice thread, guys. Does anyone know if there's any sort of permanent tribute exhibit in Belgium? I know he didn't stay too long, but I figure even after all this time they must consider him a national treasure. Quote
brownie Posted October 11, 2012 Author Report Posted October 11, 2012 A very interesting exposition! It is drawing quite a crowd! The accompanying book is excellent too, but it is in french only so far... Swing de Paris, the catalogue Quote
miles65 Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 I went there on a daytrip last Thursday In total 7 hours on trains but it was worth it. It was quiet enough to see everything at my own pace. Even if you just like Django and you can make it to Paris go there. There will be a traveling version of the exhibition but it will be a light version. Check the website of Cité de la musique. There is a new find of Django on film. A copy of the movie 'Clair de lune' (1932) wich was presumed lost has been discoverd and you can see Django for a brief moment. Quote

I had not heard of it's discovery so I thought it was a new find. The soundtrack is not included on the Fremeaux intégrale. Thanks for including the clip. I couldn't find it on you tube. Quote
Ed S Posted January 12, 2013 Report Posted January 12, 2013 While viewing the video, I spotted this one. It's almost an hour long. I found it very interesting "La vie Django": Quote
