clifford_thornton Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 I'm hearing from a number of reputable (albeit non-familial) sources that the producer Giorgio Gomelsky (John McLaughlin, SME, Gong, Blossom Toes, Vangelis, etc.) has passed away. I hope it's not true but if so, quite a significant loss. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 Wikipedia now saying he died in NYC on 13th Jan. If that is the case - RIP, a significant musical catalyst/facilitator for sure. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 yeah, I saw some pretty significant posts on social media from people who knew him well, so am gonna assume it's true and that he's gone. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 yeah, he did produce and or manage quite an amazing array of bands. Softs in the very early, Daevid Allen years as I understood it (I'm much more of a Dean-era fan). Quote
BFrank Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 Somehow his presence escaped me over the years. After reading this obit, I found out how influential he was to the British music scene. BTW, when you read this you will find out how Clapton got the nickname "Slowhand." Not what you think ... Giorgio Gomelsky Obit - NYT Quote
GA Russell Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 Thanks for that Times link, BF! I have always associated him primarily with The Yardbirds. Quote
BFrank Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 He was responsible for "Extrapolation," too! Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Giorgio sings the low part on this Yardbirds classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONVXNH7D4Qw Quote
sidewinder Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) Never realised that he used to run the Rolling Stones - until Loog-Oldham 'nicked' them. Plus ran the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond - very influential. He also 'lost' Clapton. Good obit in today's Times, albeit with not much mention of the jazz connections. So this means I can create a compilation with: "Heart Full of Soul" by the Johnny Mann Singers "Over Under Sideways Down" by Enoch Light "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" by Sandy Nelson and, now, "Still I'm Sad" by the Three Sounds. Anyone know of any covers of "For Your Love" or "Shapes of Things" by aging jazz or easy listening artists? Quote
GA Russell Posted January 20, 2016 Report Posted January 20, 2016 TTK, you need professional help! It wouldn't surprise me if William Shatner or Jack Webb did what you're looking for! Quote

Plus all those American 'garage bands' who worshiped them, and some not so garage bands like Aerosmith! Quote
