:tup, Sibelius once said: 'My music is in good hands ofĀ Barbirolli'. BarbirolliĀ also recorded the second with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra earlier. Still want to hear that version ! Maybe one time in the future. Nice to see this set come by....

Barbirolli's Sibelius 2 with the RPO is probably more highly regarded than his version with the Hallé O.  The RPO version is more extroverted -- and more well-recorded. (It was engineered by Kenneth Wilkinson and subsequently reissued on Chesky.)

FWIW, I actually prefer Barbirolli's recording with the Hallé. But any Sibelius fan needs to hear both. ;)

Ā

Incidentally, like Larry, I'm not a fan of Herbert von Karajan's Sibelius.Ā  I don't hear anything so dire as a Nazi rally; HvK's reading is just so polished,Ā sleek, and smooth. ... It doesn't align with my idea of Sibelius.Ā

Barbirolli's RPO Sibelius 2 is a gem, but the version I prefer isĀ Tauno Hannikainen's.

This RCA LP is Ormandy's second recording of Sibelius' Second Symphony. His first, for Columbia/Sony, is considered a "classic," but I like this later interpretation too.

Yes, that's the one :tupĀ Good value too.Ā I already had about half of the recordings and was still worth the price of the box for me.Ā

Just enjoyedĀ the superb Dvorak/ Janacek / Martinu - Lieder disc from that set - Rudolf Firkusny with Gabriela Benackova.
