Tom 1960 Posted March 18, 2016 Report Posted March 18, 2016 I've been a fan of Gerald's music for quite some time owning the big box Mosaic. That said, I hadn't ventured into his later recordings till very recently when I purchased "In My Time". All I can say is wow! Anyone else here agree? Other thoughts on some of his other releases? duaneiac Posted March 18, 2016 Report Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) I really like this one: I recall hearing this music when it was premiered by Mr. Wilson at the Monterey Jazz Festival back in the days when the festival could still be heard "live" on KCSM. The crowd loved it. Each piece of the suite is a variation on the same theme and they all work wonderfully. Edited March 18, 2016 by duaneiac Quote
Tom 1960 Posted March 18, 2016 Author Report Posted March 18, 2016 What's amazing to me is with his advanced age mid 80's as with "In My Time", the quality of the arrangements. Superb! Quote

Superb! I have most of Wilson's post-Pacific Jazz records. I don't think any of them are better than In My Time. And I agree 100% re: the arrangements. Plus Jon Faddis and Ron Blake take some AMAZING solos. Edited March 21, 2016 by HutchFan Quote
sidewinder Posted March 19, 2016 Report Posted March 19, 2016 (edited) Seeing this thread had me digging out for a spin 'In My Time' - the first time for a long while. At his South Bank, London concert around 2007/8, Mr Wilson featured the 'Diminished Triangle' suite from this album with the BBC Radio Big Band. I recall him featuring the late Vic Ash quite prominently. 'So What' and 'Jeri' from this album were also played that night I think. Just noticed an early appearance by Kamasi Washington on this album as well. 21 hours ago, duaneiac said: I really like this one: I recall hearing this music when it was premiered by Mr. Wilson at the Monterey Jazz Festival back in the days when the festival could still be heard "live" on KCSM. Also played at the Playboy Festival in LA in 1999 - first time I heard it ! Edited March 19, 2016 by sidewinder Quote
JSngry Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 Gerald Wilson was a grownass man who wrote grownass music!!! Gravitas, aplenty, even in the "lessrr" moments. Quote
John Tapscott Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 (edited) Just about every Gerald Wilson is worth savoring. Along with a definite thumbs up for "Theme for Monterey" I really like this one. Edited March 20, 2016 by John Tapscott Quote

Having spun this a couple more times this afternoon - totally agree. In fact I would say that the performance here of old warhorses such as 'Lomelin' even surpasses the originals - and that is saying something. Renee Rosnes on piano is outstanding - doesn't put a foot wrong. Fabulous ! Edited March 26, 2016 by sidewinder Quote
