Harbour Posted April 4, 2016 Report Posted April 4, 2016 Was hoping to to pick up his early Savoy albums and wondered which are the best to get, there are numerous budget compilations like this out there https://www.discogs.com/Yusef-Lateef-The-Complete-Recordings-1957-1959/release/7464629 but obviously packaging is poor and not sure about mastering etc. Am amazed at the lack of any Japanese reissues of this material or indeed a lot of his later stuff, bar eastern sounds, Before Dawn and Gentle Giant he seems to have been totally ignored, any reasons why? cheers Quote
jazzbo Posted April 4, 2016 Report Posted April 4, 2016 (edited) Several of the sessions came out as LP replicas when Denon was reissuing Savoy material in the early nineties. Then there was a two cd set of several albums reissued in the US when Atlantic took over the Savoy reissues. Between those releases most of the material was reissued in very good sound. I haven't heard the "budget" reissues. . . . If you do vinyl there are excellent two cd sets from Arista Records that reissue the entire output. Here are images of the Savoy Denon and Savoy Atlantic Cds. I believe all or nearly all the Atlantic albums have actually been reissued in Japan in the 24 bit series from Warner/Japan. And there were Japanese budget cd reissues of two of the Impulse titles last year in Japan from Universal. Edited April 4, 2016 by jazzbo Quote
sidewinder Posted April 5, 2016 Report Posted April 5, 2016 Those Savoy/Arista 2LP sets sound very good and can usually be picked up for not much money. 'Gong' and 'Morning' are both recommended. Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 5, 2016 Report Posted April 5, 2016 I haven't heard ALL of the Savoy recordings yet, but I have listened to about half of them, and second/third the comments made above - they are all worth hearing. Quote
