ejp626 Posted October 19 Report Posted October 19 From the ridiculous (saw Clue in the theatre today - haven't seen it since the original release in the 1980s) to a much more intriguing offering, Edward Yang's A Confucian Confusion. I'm planning on watching Mahjong tonight, as the set is due at the library tomorrow! I might have been willing to stump up for a DVD set, but Criterion only issued this on Blu-Ray, and it does not appear that this will be turning up used, though I suppose one never knows... I've heard that this is the first time the films have been made available in decent condition. Quote
T.D. Posted October 27 Report Posted October 27 Saw this new release Not really recommended, though it has a decent jazz score by Rob Mazurek. Billed as "moody", but IMO unfolds at a glacial pace, and the protagonist (who is onscreen almost the whole time) is a puzzling nondescript cipher who evokes no sympathy and I found of negligible interest. Josh O'Connor, who plays him, does a good job. Quote

Me too (in principle), but I am not telegenic and would completely lack screen presence, propelling the film into farcical / disaster territory. 😁 I think O'Connor's performance has gotten positive reviews. Cinema / theatre stars have a certain presence not common in the general population. Edited October 27 by T.D. Quote
JSngry Posted October 27 Author Report Posted October 27 Farcical disaster? Count me in, I'll work for free🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄!!!!! Quote
adh1907 Posted October 30 Report Posted October 30 I enjoyed the film. Slow but tense. Great ending. The cinema I saw this at today (Barbican, London) said it had a ‘stress inducing jazz score’! Well, it had me tapping my foot but maybe why three people walked out before the end. Quote
gmonahan Posted November 4 Report Posted November 4 Saw and enjoyed "One Battle After Another." Going to see "Blue Moon" tonight. Quote
ejp626 Posted November 17 Report Posted November 17 Saw The Usual Suspects in the theatre. I was planning on seeing something from the European Union Film Fest, but decided to catch Bob Le Flambeur instead (as they were on the same day). Quote
ejp626 Posted November 19 Report Posted November 19 I did make it to Bob Le Flambeur. I had seen a fair number of French noir or neo-noir films, and I had assumed I had seen this, though it was definitely the first time. A few odd plot holes (Bob had known Marc for years and only just found out he was still pimping -- really?), but generally quite interesting. Quote
ejp626 Posted November 26 Report Posted November 26 One of the budget cinemas in Toronto was showing Jeanne Dielman. (A strange choice.) I figured the only way I would stick it out was in the theatre, as opposed to watching at home. I'm sure that is the case after sitting through it this evening. I'll just say I am not a fan and leave it at that. Quote
