mikeweil Posted August 12, 2016 Report Posted August 12, 2016 So here we have a book, If I read his introduction correctly, that was a blog before, drawing mostly on internet sources. He recommends Youtube, Spotify, Wikipedia. Did ever look into Michel Ruppli's Prestige Discography, or any of the printed jazz encyclopedias, or any other book on any of the musicians he writes about? I do not see a bibliographical list in his table of contents. For a blog relying only on internet sources, this is okay, but I would have expected he expands his sources for a printed version. Does his blog still exist? The prospect of a generation using the web as their exclusice source of information frightens me - there is a lot found nowhere else, like some details told here on the forum, but there is so much availabe only in printed sources or on records ... I'm skeptical, and find this approach a bit naive. Quote
JSngry Posted August 12, 2016 Report Posted August 12, 2016 Also, those early years covered a lot of different grounds, always things made for the jukebox market as well as for the "pure jazz fan". Is this a comprehensicve look at ALL of Prestige, or just the really well(ish)-known survivors? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 12, 2016 Report Posted August 12, 2016 I was intrigued enough to order a copy. I am curious and could not resist. They say it will be delivered Sunday. Quote

JohnS Posted August 13, 2016 Author Report Posted August 13, 2016 Since my first post I had a quick look at the Kindle sample. Looking at the few pages sampled it didn't look like there was very much new there. Quote
mikeweil Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 The author is not discographically inclined - covers sessions acquired by Prestige many years after being recorded, like the Chaloff/Pettiford - there are many board members here that are more knowledgeable. As a document of his enthusiasm it is okay, though. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 I received my copy - not a scholarly effort. Sigh. Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Too bad. The subject would have been very interesting to me too. Quote
