An Ellington octet recording that has a nice mellow "having fun" vibe.

Agreed. I like that one very much.  :)

Down to Earth: The Bluesway Recordings

Otis Spann: Down to Earth - The Bluesway Recordings (MCA)

Some very fine Spann, backed by Muddy Waters and band. The only slight downside is Lucille Spann's presence on a few tracks. Someone (I imagine that Otis couldn't, since he was her husband - perhaps Muddy or producer Bob Thiele could have made the decision) should have told her that she was no singer.

Forgot how good this performance is. Two old veterans Russell and Allen backed by the modernists Kuhn, Haden and Morell.

Wow. Great sound too.

This has never come out on cd ( I transferred it to digital to have it always available.).  Wouldn't it be great if it got released on cd with the rest of the concert. Charlie Haden always pointed  out that he played on this when asked about how he moved from Ornette to his later work.

Medjuck,

Do you have any information suggesting that there's more material from the concert?  No additional music is shown in Bob Hilbert's Pee Wee Russell discography.

The performances were used in conjunction with a lecture by Whitney Bailliett.

Working at home today.  Listening to the following, both recorded on the same day:

This would be excellent as a release with the entire concert. Even an official release of the released material would be great, though it sounds really good on the ABC/Impulse lp I have. It has been out as part of a "two-fer plus" release on cd from Solar Records, one of the Gray Market trailblazers. . . .
