Joel Dorn thought, in retrospect, that it was well overproduced. A mistake.

But Newman still plays nicely and some of the cuts (like 'Missy'' and 'drown in my tears') are killers.

'Soulful rebel' is quite a disappointment after 'People & love' - not that it's bad, but...

I can see that why Dorn might've thought that. Some of the background, party-time crowd noise on one of the cuts is unnecessary. Maybe less "window dressing" would have made for a more impactful record.  But overall I think the album WORKS -- especially if I think of it as a straight-up soul record, a sort of Ray Charles-less Ray Charles record.  

Fathead's four-year run from Captain Buckles (1971) to Lonely Avenue (1972) to The Weapon (1973) and Newmanism (1974) is quite a purple patch, imho.
