I just snagged the Private Collection box for $44.13 after tax and shipping! That'll put my Duke collection at around 50 CDs, yet I still feel like a neophyte. I have only one volume from that series, so I am excited.  Quote

JSngry Posted June 20, 2020 Author Report Posted June 20, 2020 That Sestina is something else! Serial done right, with imagination, flair, and clarity of musical, not just mathematical, purpose. I can hear the math, but only as it serves the music, not the other way around. Plus, that guy sitting at his manuscript while smoking...THESE are they types of guys Stan Kenton should have been working with, LOL. Quote

duaneiac Posted June 21, 2020 Report Posted June 21, 2020 Disc 1 & 2 of 2. Boy, they start right out of the gate by giving "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life?" a good pummeling and this band rarely lets up after that. Quote
Gheorghe Posted June 21, 2020 Report Posted June 21, 2020 I have not listened much to Bud Powell for some time, but today I was in the mood for this outstanding record. Bud must have been very inspirated here since he plays more than 18 minutes on Swedish Pastry. I remember Clifford is really deep and I Hear Music is full of flashy runs, this is a later stage of Bud´s career but he is great as ever. Quote
JSngry Posted June 21, 2020 Author Report Posted June 21, 2020 Forgive me if I focus on the rhythm section, not because of any deficiencies of the front line, but because of...the rhythm section. Quote
