Gheorghe Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 Here´s a fine Sonny Rollins album from spring 1979, featuring Larry Coryell as a guest artist. It was recorded few weeks before I saw Sonny Rollins live with the same quartet Mark Soskin, Jerome Harris, Al Foster. Larry Coryell was also scheduled on that festival (Velden 1979), but not together with Rollins. It was just a great time, you purchased albums and could see those artists live, presenting mostly their stuff from their latest albums. "Disco Monk" is also featured on "Road Shows Vol. IV" as a live version with the same group at the same time I saw them...... Great memories of a great time...... Quote
Justin V Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 Thinking about Benny Golson on his 92nd birthday. I only have one other Winchester album, With Feeling, which has another living legend, the mighty Roy Haynes. Quote

This is a personal favorite of mine, which I have as part of the PJ piano trios Select and also as a Japanese mini-LP. Edited January 25, 2021 by Bluesnik Quote
jazzbo Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 I have the Mosaic Select, and this mini-lp. . . and just discovered when I went to merge it with my other mini-lps. . . that I have another copy! Such is the life of a collector. Now playing I was missing vitamin wah-wah-guitar from my musical diet so spinning this disc fixed what ailed me. Marvin Gaye "You're the Man" This album didn't come out when it was recorded in '72. Quote
gmonahan Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 Couldn't find a cover photo that would fit in the small dimensions allowed, but I've been listening to "Last Night When We Were Young: The Ballad Album" that was put together by pianist Fred Hersch in '94 as an AIDS benefit. Phil Woods plays clarinet on one track ("Adios Nonino"). It's very pretty. I don't think I have Woods playing clarinet anywhere else. gregmo Quote
jazzbo Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 I forgot how good this one is! What a band. . . . "The Pepper-Knepper Quintet" Pepper Adams – baritone saxophone Jimmy Knepper – trombone Wynton Kelly – piano, organ Doug Watkins – bass Elvin Jones – drums Quote

Justin V Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 Some more Benny Golson, via his arrangements on Brass Shout. The reissue pairing it with The Aztec Suite is essential Art Farmer, IMO. Quote
