jazzbo Posted December 18, 2021 Report Posted December 18, 2021 Doug Carn "Adam's apple" Black Jazz/Real Gone Music cd I haven't heard this one in a long time. I have always liked it. This was the first place I heard Ronnie Laws, and then I picked up on his work again when I moved to Texas. Quote

Very much like those on the other Carns though there are a few more singers and there is more of a "song" feeling to the arrangements. I have always liked them, but if seventies jazz funky vocals aren't one's cup of tea. . . . Quote

Rabshakeh Posted December 19, 2021 Report Posted December 19, 2021 Robert Dick - Third Stone from the Sun (1993) Just such a great record. I've been mixing up this and some Fathead Newman today, so it's been a flute epic. Quote

felser Posted December 19, 2021 Report Posted December 19, 2021 They did some really strange artwork at CTI. Good music, though... Quote
Rabshakeh Posted December 19, 2021 Report Posted December 19, 2021 interesting to contrast Criss with Sonny Stitt, in the light of the recent Stitt v Gordon thread. Criss is another player who got tarred with the Charlie Parker imitator brush. He ends up putting album after album of fluff tunes in the 70s. But unlike Stitt, you always get the sense that he really feels it. Quote
