I'm totally unversed in classical so in terms of how true these songs are to the source material I can't tell you. For all I know the titles could be a ruse to lure in Chopin fans and then sucker them into the jazz world. The old switcheroo, if you will. It's a good album though, esp if you like Rosenwinkel's style and sound. Brodbeck is new for me and I dug his piano playing also. 5 hours ago, JSngry said:   3 hours ago, mjazzg said: That's an old favourite Listening to this one and damn it's got some atmosphere Quote
JSngry Posted May 10, 2022 Author Report Posted May 10, 2022 Only been paying any real attention to "classical" for a few years now (and generally more modern stuff), but Chopin's harmonies have had an immeasurable influence on a certain type of jazz harmony. Any good collection of the Preludes won't hurt any, if you know what I mean. Quote

My introduction to both Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor, both of whom I still pay very close attention to Quote

I see in the notes on the rear card they played with Fred Anderson, so that's definitely intriguing. Quote
mjazzg Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 (edited) I suspect Mr Anderson cast a very influential shadow over the generation represented by the Chicago Underground crew, maybe less so in musical style than in organisation and facilitation. They connect strongly with Tortoise and others from that Chicago scene. Jeff Parker's in the mix too so in a way it threads right through to the current International Anthem stable. Edited May 10, 2022 by mjazzg Quote
John Tapscott Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 This is a great CD. I've never heard Joe Henderson play better than he does here (maybe it's the excellent recording quality).  Quote

I've never heard Joe Henderson play better than he does here (maybe it's the excellent recording quality).  Must find that. For me it looks like an absolute dream band. Those four stars, each one of them for itself have been my very favourites from what I heard and saw live on Festivals from the late 70´s to the early 80´s. Within only a year (79/80) I had seen Joe Henderson twice, Ron Carter with his own Quartet, McTyner sextet with the personnel of "Horizon" and Al Foster with Sonny Rollins......., great times when all of them were at the peak of their power and we saw them regularly and would wait for their next albums.... Ron Carter was something like a "Mr. Hip" for us, very very tall, and that incredible bass sound with all his gimmicks like those glissandos and double grips....., Ron´s sound on Milestone Records or with VSOP was the sound of our time...., and McCoy Tyner seemed to be one of the most influencial pianists of all times....
