Herbie Hancock – Magic Windows (Columbia, 1981)

R-676625-1621088009-7659.jpg

First listen. An extremely cool electro funk record.

Now on:

Herbie Hancock Trio With Ron Carter + Tony Williams (Columbia, 1981)R-12068968-1527666879-7641.jpg

Also first listen. Seems less good. It's like everything that made Hancock interesting in the 60s has been washed out of his acoustic playing by this time.

Never listened to Magic Windows before, so streaming now. Nice morning vibes :tup

I agree.  It's strangely flat.

Can't let go of this one. Very "complete within itself". Compositions and arrangements bot fully developed, not sketched out. The humor is subtle, not broad, and the use of the instrumentation (including organ as ensemble color, not just soloist) is about as skilled as it can be.

WP Charles Tolliver's Paper Man,

NP Ted Curson's Blue Piccolo. This Curson album is from '76 with McBee, Jim McNeely and Jim McCall (Curson & the 3 Mc's?). First time I've heard this and I like it. On the Whynot label and first released in Japan. No US release until '82 on India Navigation.

It´s the best album Dexter made for CBS, one of his very best albums in general and maybe one of the best albums of late 70´s acoustic jazz.

And not only the music, it´s the cover that´s great, and the liner notes is also great to read.

I have only superlatives for that album and that Quartet.
