An additional blow for the CBBB was that they never "crossed over" to the U.S .... after winning the "Melody Maker" Big Band poll in 1969 an extensive U.S Tour was in the plans, but never did materialize ....

Ex-pat Herb Geller was chosen as Derek Humble's substitute....

My definite preference is for the early CCBB recordings. I never really cared much for the  album with Getz nor with Off Limits.

Also found the use of 2 drummers to be less than ideal. Kenny Clarke was one of the best drummers around, and more than able to handle the drum part for the band. Sometimes I found the sound of the 2 drummers playing together irritating.

For some reason, this album usually gets overlooked among all the focus on Blue Note records. It is a very fine recording with some wonderful playing by Thad, Gigi Gryce, & Tommy Flanagan. It also features some of my favorite playing by Elvin Jones.

I have it, but must admit I have not spinned it for quite some time.
I had seen Thad Jones with his Bigband with Mel Lewis and I think that´s how he will be remembered by most of all fans.

I think I also have a Debut record that is called "The Fabulous Th.J."
He was a great trumpet player but maybe got a bit forgotten. Jazz students might listen more to the other BN-Artists who were trumpetists, like Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard or from the generation of Thad Jones maybe to Kenny Dorham or even Fats Navarro.

“Swiss Radio Days Vol. 48 - Louis Armstrong All Stars” Dot Time cd

New release. . . slightly different lineup with McCracken on clarinet. . . sound is good (Louis could be a little louder when singing).
