Dub Modal Posted July 19, 2021 Report Posted July 19, 2021 Re-listening this morning and am really enjoying these songs. Track 10 which I don't think has been ID'd yet is very good. Quote

felser Posted July 20, 2021 Report Posted July 20, 2021 (edited) Wanting to think Sonny Fortune on #10, but can't place an album of him with vibes. Except for Roy Ayers albums, and this doesn't seem to track to one of them (though Harry Whitaker could fit). Edited July 20, 2021 by felser Quote

I'd say lesser known, but I'd rank this guy ahead of Sonny (most likely would not agree). Quote
JSngry Posted July 20, 2021 Report Posted July 20, 2021 Eddie Gomez? Or Stanley Clarke? Seems like a busy bunch, this group... Quote
felser Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 Same guy playing both soprano and flute? Quote
randyhersom Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 (edited) Moe Koffman? Edited July 21, 2021 by randyhersom Quote

At the risk of putting some off, I would list this player as more serious. He also appears elsewhere on this test. 11 hours ago, felser said: Same guy playing both soprano and flute? randyhersom Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 I don't think you would refer to Bunnett as "this guy" and I don't think Newton doubles on anything not a flute, so Gary Bartz? I haven't spotted any vibes on Bartz's leader dates on Wikipedia. Quote
JSngry Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 You could say Joe Farrell, but I don't think that's a "major" player, although he certainly was a comp[etent and prolific one. Quote
Dub Modal Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 Long shot on #10 here but is it Karl Berger on vibes? Quote

Bennie Maupin? Although I can't find anything in his discography that would match this track. Edited July 21, 2021 by Dub Modal Quote
Dub Modal Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 (edited) Oliver Lake is another possibility. Whoever it is sounds like they're pushing some serious air through that soprano. Listened to this song about 4 times this morning and it gets better each time. Edited July 21, 2021 by Dub Modal Quote
felser Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 (edited) Farrell was the other guy I thought of, but not aware of anything in his discography that would match. So later than Farrell, vibes player is post-Hutcherson, and it's something I should nail. Kenny Garrett? Steve Nelson? Mulgrew Miller? Edited July 21, 2021 by felser Quote

randyhersom Posted July 21, 2021 Report Posted July 21, 2021 While I think liking Steve Wilson better than Sonny Fortune is a stretch, he does appear elsewhere on this BFT and Bryan Carrott is also on the same album. Non-brass horns on oth ertracks in this BFT 1. Jane Bunnett 2. James Carter 3. eddie henderson w donald Harrison 4. Barney McAll w Gary Bartz and Peter APfelbaum 5. James Newton 6. Jazz Crusaders w Wilton Felder 7. Anthony Branker with Steve Wilson, Ralph Bowen 8. Vandermark 5 w Dave Rempis 9. Rollins 11. Tapscott w Steve Smith Aubrey Hart (pic) Adele Sebastian (fl) Jesse Sharps (sop) Gary Bias, Michael Session (as) Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq, Charles Chandler (ts) Quote

No, but a much closer neighborhood. This guy is far less known than Joe, Bennie, et al. 29 minutes ago, randyhersom said: While I think liking Steve Wilson better than Sonny Fortune is a stretch, he does appear elsewhere on this BFT and Bryan Carrott is also on the same album. Although, on second check, the saxophonist ALSO makes multiple appearances. Edited July 21, 2021 by tkeith checked my own error Quote

I've been looking around at stuff from Greg Osby, Gary Thomas and Steve Wilson but can't find any matches. Trying to stay "newer" than Joe Farrell. Other than those guys, I can think of Azar Lawrence as someone who would switch from flute to soprano. Fathead would be before Joe F.'s time so not guessing him (oh, and Don Rendell too) Edited July 21, 2021 by Dub Modal Quote

I've had that in my basket over at AS for a while now, just havent pulled the trigger (no idea if it's even in stock at this point). Great record and Bias must keep a tight hold on his masters as I dont see this anywhere digitally. Quote
