gmonahan
Pee Wee Russell was an expressionist painter?! I kind of like the one on the right. Like all those nice box sets in back of the paintings too!

Chuck Nessa
Yes Pee Wee painted the impulse cover. There are around 90 paintings by him. These were in Terry Martin's collection and his sons gave them to me. The horizontal painting is #45. titled The Crab, painted in August, 1966. The other one is #77, titled Turmoil, painted in February, 1967. I believe Terry got these from the estate of Marian McPartland. jazztrain
Chuck, There was an exhibit of artwork by Pee Wee Russell and George Wettling (who had studied with Stuart Davis) at Wilkes College in 1986. The exhibition booklet is available here: https://www.wilkes.edu/about-wilkes/arts/sordoni-art-gallery/past-exhibitions/_assets/_pdf_archives/1986-April-27-Pee-Wee-Russelland-Geaorge-Wettling.pdf. There's some useful information there about his paintings. I have a copy as well as a copy of the exhibition poster. Jon

Ed S
I was only able to see the painting that is the album cover. I like it a lot. I did a search for more of his art and came up with this one entitled "Audience" Nice work, IMO Here's a few more: Who knew? Nice stuff. Interesting. Chuck Nessa
For some reason my pic of the 2 paintings is gone - I found these images of them at https://www.estatesales.net/NY/Port-Washington/11050/669141 Edited October 9, 2023 by Chuck Nessa
Ken Dryden
Bob Haggart was also some a painter, some of his paintings appeared on album covers for some of the Jazzology albums. Marian McPartland told me that Haggart sent her a painting he did of Jimmy McPartland and the bassist died either while it was in transit or just after Marian received it.
