Cohn/Kamuca/Perkins - The Brothers

Surprisingly, in view of my liking for the sons of Lester, I wasn't taken by The Brothers, but am much happier with Perkins and Kamuca, Tenors Head On. How do you find The Brothers?

just about two-thirds through... the guitar players are not featured anywhere as much as i had hoped (but i guess buying a record with three leaders to hear the sidemen is a bit stupid)... but with the selection of tunes, the solos of the three tenors, and (mostly) the overall mood i am pretty happy - but then, this is essentially my first album with kamuca and perkins (dick collins "king richard the swinghearted" has the same three tenors have that one and probably love it much more - but not so much for the tenors...)

Continuing my recent journey into Monk's music:

Thelonious Monk -- "Complete Prestige Recordings"

(Haven't received the Lands or Byrds yet. Maybe today. The Monk stuff is all wonderful. And yes, "Monk's Music" is genius -- raw, crazy, beautiful, jarring.)

You lucky guy! The Prestige stuff is a real highlight of Monk's career, and since he was on the label for such a relatively short time the material can be taken in almost all at once, in a white heat of enthusiasm and discovery. And it sounds like you're going for it! :tup

Yes. Arrived earlier today and I've been listening to the first two discs. Wonderful.

Albert Ayler, "Love Cry." Figured I couldn't put it off much longer.

Alan Silva is going to blow you away on this one!

Found used today for $8 : Art Blakey-Meet at the Jazz Corner of the World! Great value, considering its OOP now.

Yes. Really looking forward to that one.

Bit the bullet today and ordered something I've been salivating over for a few weeks:

"Complete Bud Powell on Verve"

It's a high quality set with a great booklet and insight to Bud's playing and mental health at that time.

While its not one I pull out that often due to the all of the false starts and aborted takes there is a lot of great music on it (disc 1 is particularly impressive) but I wouldn't recommend it to someone new to Bud as there is lot of tunes where Bud is not at his best as pointed out in the booklet and how it affected his playing. I think if Bud had a say in it this would be a 3 disc set but its still a fascinating set for us Jazz geeks.

Thanks for that WB3. :tup Judging from the write-ups, I knew it was going to be a warts-and-all set. But I'm sort of at the stage with Powell where I want to listen to the warts, so to speak, as well as the inspired playing.

In honor of Lester Young's birthday, I ordered "Pres and Teddy" today.

Excellent disc Paps, one of my favorites of his. It's a Lester Young day for me today as well. In the mailbox today:

Complete Savoy Recordings

Ordered today because I need to compliment vol. 1 and I found a new/sealed copy dirt cheap:

A Fine Romance, Vol. 2

I think I have a lot of this stuff elsewhere but it's nice to have it all together.
