Have successfully received two shipments from CD Japan without delays since the imposition of tariffs.

Did you get a bill for the tariff after delivery?

FedEx emailed me a little over two weeks after delivery to have me pay.

This happened to me with a recent order of WeJazz magazines from Finland. UPS delivered them without issue…and then sent me a bill two weeks later. The bill included a small tariff fee, in addition to a $14 “brokerage” fee…despite the fact that magazines should be exempt from these tariffs. Rather than have this bill go to collections, I went ahead and paid it. So…it really seems like there’s no consistency at all regarding what items the tariffs are being applied to.

I just received a few LPs from Japan via JapanPost/USPS with no issues. Marked 'gift' and not expensive albums anyway, just took a little longer than DHL, which I used with this seller prior to the de minimis horseshit. No customs issue or tariffs present. I'm still wary, but it worked out. The seller suggested that JapanPost was the way to go in order to circumvent tariffs.

I'll add that this was the first international order I'd done since August...

Carville: no I did not get a bill.  I find it odd that a shipper would contact the buyer after the items have cleared the customs house to attempt to collect a tariff or tax. My understanding is that an item cannot clear the customs house without payment if said payment is required.

I think that CDJapan stated somewhere that it calculates and includes an amount for the tariff but I have not see any evidence of that. It does charge a flat 1300 yen fee for customs clearance or handling. One of those last two shipments I mention above was for 7 cds.  My last shipment before the tariffs was for 7 cds. Notably, there was only about a 300 yen difference in the respective shipping costs.

My order had 20 cds, shipped via fedex express. Weird, no customs paperwork anywhere on the package, no indication of what was inside the box. I agree Cliff, it shouldn't have been delivered without tariffs paid if indeed they were due. But I have read here and elsewhere about people getting a bill later on.

Carville:  Yes I have read that also. Based on my understanding of who is to collect customs fees and when those fees are to be collected, I would wonder about the authenticity of both a bill for such fees and the company seeing payment.
