  3. Hi Alfred, Welcome to this board! I hope you'll enjoy it. Good luck with the Ellington set.
  4. According to the Red Lick website Vol.5 of the ongoing Bessie Smith series on Frog Records is out now: http://www.redlickrecords.com/db/justin.doc The site also lists the new European Blue Note reissues.
  5. Last year I got info from sources in the U.K. that JSP might have "taken advantage" of Mosaic, Bear Family and possibly Revenant remasters for some of their box sets (I'm not talking about the sets that were remastered by John R.T. Davies, of course) There was a discussion about this on "the old board", but unfortunately it didn't survive...
  6. That's a bargain, compared with the official Japanese list price of 2,500 yen (approximately $21 or €20)

  9. It's the quality that counts, not the quantity...
  10. This is one of my all-time favorites, though I rate Mingus' The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady even higher. It's on its way to my CD player NOW.
  11. He's probably got too many albums to choose from
  12. The Penguin Guide (sixth edition) insists that the Fresh Sound contains material that was recorded at the "Both / And" in June 1970, a month before the Lighthouse date. I wonder who's right...
  13. Zweitausendeins are offering several jazz twofers at low prices, such as the Deluxe Editions of Coltrane's Ballads and A Love Supreme at only €12.99 (approximately $14) each, and many others: http://www.zweitausendeins.de , click on "Angebote", scroll down and click on "Jazz-Doppel-CDs".
  14. ...how about 4) I gave my copy to Big Al Rearick
  15. Scott, Don't get me wrong, I love The All Seeing Eye; it's right up my alley, from A to Z. My question was a general one, just in case... I'm interested in most jazz styles (though much swing-style jazz is "not really my cup of tea", it quickly bores me), but I'm a big fan of bop, hard bop, 1960s "advanced hard bop" and modal jazz. Haven't listened much to free jazz / avant garde since my initial interest in it fell into a deep sleep way back in the early 1970s, but I started listening to it again a couple of years ago and now I'm figuring out which albums to add to my humble free / avant garde collection.
  16. Bertrand, See the first page of this thread re Soul Fountain. I've never heard it, so I can't comment on it; to be honest it doesn't "look" very promising to me - but then again, I'm not a fan of "organ dates" or "dates with organ", to put it mildly.
  17. Sure, that did cross my mind too, of course, but what if you're absolutely negative about an album? I know, it sounds very negative, but there are albums that I absolutely detest and got nothing positive to say about, such as Donald Byrd's I'm Trying to Get Home and A New Perspective, and it's not my intention to hurt anyone.
  18. Question to all: what to do if you don't like or even hate "the album of the week", 1. keep one's mouth shut and refrain from posting; or 2. simply post "yuck"; or 3. politely but firmly say "this is not quite my cup of tea" (posh accent not required ).
  19. At least those I've bought two times!
  20. I take it you're keeping your Duke Pearson albums...
  21. I've got that one. Haven't listened to it in a long time. In fact, I even forgot that I had it. Thanks for reminding me! It's a really nice date with Clifford, Hank Jones, Reggie Workman and Freddie Waits. Side 1 is a single tune, "Vienna" and Side 2 is "Bohemia After Dark" and "Love For Sale". There's even a double-sided insert with notes and photos about the recording technology that went into this direct-to-disk session. The only info that's nowhere to be found is the recording date ... weird. According to the AMG it was recorded in the summer of 1978: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Azad6vwvta9lk
  22. €1 = $1.09 at the moment.
  23. Welcome, Menace! By the way, your first picture got lost somewhere, at least on my PC.
  24. Ah... Just as I was about to post something about a ship missing somewhere off Newfoundland after meeting with an iceberg...
  25.
