  1. As far as I'm concerned Vonzell should get bounced. Not because she's black, but because she's so generic. There are a million like her, and watching her talk or interact outside of singing is like watching a mannequin programmed for "Whitney Emotion" I like Bo, the last remaining rocker, who just wants to have a good time and sing. I suspect the sympathy vote for Scott will run out soon, with he and Carrie (who should have been gone a LONG time ago too) going next. Then Bo, then who knows. The Clay Aiken contingent could put Fedorov over the top-- they're all ganging together since Clay lost
  2. Resurrecting this old thread because after resting this box for a year or so, I have grown a new appreciation for the playing here. In particular, the tandem of Junior Cook and Blue Mitchell (not to mention Corea). The first time I listened to this set I was unsettled by the first song 'Mamacita' in which Joe Henderson just blows Mitchell right off the stage! Mitchell's playing there wasn't that interesting and I loved Henderson's solo there. Somehow it left a bad taste in my mouth, especially paired with the "middleweight champ" tag the booklet confers on Mitchell. But man, Fungii Mama, Perception, Tones for Joan's Bones-- wow. It reminds me I need to read less and listen more
  3. The good rocker made it anyway
  4. I'd agree that Keys has far more potential than Stone, but I know who I'd rather listen to especially now that Keys has chosen the pop-diva-pimp-myself-out-as-a-ho route to selling records, hanging on the arm of the latest talentless Usher/Mario/etc whiner of the moment with enough makeup to make Tammy Faye Bakker take a step back. At least Joss Stone puts it out there and does her level best to sing a music that she clearly loves-- and more power to her for it!

    Fats Waller

I'm reading a biography of Fats Waller (by Maurice Waller and Anthony Calabrese) and am wondering what the essential Waller recordings might be. I have only one CD with Waller, some no-name compilation that I can't even find at the moment...
  6. To be fair, the question is whether more education would have had an effect, not whether it would have erased drugs from the scene. I have to think that education and awareness would have had some effect-- heroin use has been largely driven underground (relatively speaking) in the last 20-30 years. How *significant* that difference would have been, I don't know.
  7. I have a CD called "Nostalgia" (Fats Navarro Memorial No. 2) Savoy MG-12133 The No. 2 implies there may be others...are there?
  8. Greatness-- particularly of the subtle sort-- will always spawn legions of poor imitators. That's why you see so many people trying to write like Carver or Hemingway (or Faulkner, Munro, etc) and so few people trying to juggle running chainsaws and sharpened machetes. Doesn't explain people who try to write like Dave Eggers or David Foster Wallace though
  9. Since podcasting seems to be the new black, has anyone heard any good jazz podcasts? I have come across some interesting things to listen to when it comes to pop/rock, film reviews, and personal essays/nonfiction, but it seems like Jazz would be a natural for this kind of thing. I've thought about doing one of my own, but the idea of my take on jazz would probably be worse for listeners than hearing my poetry
  10. Joss Stone's first album really worked for me. The second not so much. Alicia Keys was great on her first album but has now gone totally pop in my opinion. Stone's "For the Love of You" is an amazing number...
  11. I'm looking for the Brad Mehladau promo "deregulating jazz" mentioned in a thread here-- apparently it has an Elliott Smith and Radiohead cover? Anyone have this for sale or other?
  12. Glad to add the new signed CD to my Organissimo "collection"
  13. What do you think? I've read a couple of her novels and wished they were better. --eric this one's her best, IMHO. That's good to know-- I didn't even bother finishing it!
  14. Oh, and any specific blues or reggae suggestions also gratefully accepted
  15. I've been with emusic for a long time and am looking to branch out into some of the smaller labels... my taste is generally pretty straightforward: straight ahead, bop, classic stuff. I Want to open my ears, but not til they bleed Suggestions?

    Mingus Big Band

I'm excited-- we're finally getting some live jazz herein the frozen north (no kidding, we just got three inches of snow yesterday)... the Mingus Big Band is coming to town. Anyone know what their current line-up is looking like? Anyone heard 'em lately?
  17. I find IMDB invaluable, but it is just one resource amongst many. If I want reviews, I usually start with rottentomatoes.com and go from there...
  18. Of course an Organissimo track is guaranteed too
  19. So, I'm getting ready to burn some mixed-CDs for friends who are somewhat into jazz, but not fanatics. What tracks would you put on a desert island mixed disc for your vaguely jazz-loving friends? Things that avoid the most common tracks that a casual listener will have heard, of course...
  20. Seahawks threw away their chances in the first 1/4 with a series of stupid mistakes. They played good football later, but you can't let the Patriots take a big lead and expect to make it all up. Silly, silly kid mistakes...
  21. I see that Seahawk's loss as a fluke, not a sign. That being said, Patriots are tough-- Dillon is turning out to be just the ingredient I expected-- and Seattle is by no means a great road team. There is no conceivable score in this game that I couldn't justify: a closely fought high scoring game, a closely fought low score, or a lopsided defense either way. I'm picking Seattle by 7, just because I've been rooting for them all year
  22. Conn: no harm, no foul. I envy your enthusiasm! Me, I'm feeling pretty good about the Seahawks. I think they have all the pieces, but can they play with some consistency and avoid losing too much to injuries? I'm rootin' for 'em. I'd like to see Green Bay go deep too. I love Favre, but he's not as young as he used to be and while exciting to watch, he cost them big last season with some ill-considered passes. I don't think he's embarrassing himself, but I hope he goes out on a high note-- and decides to go out sooner rather than later...
  23. oh yeah-- I used spot remover on my dog. Now he's gone.
  24. Well, I for one think the whole NEW Last Comic Standing premise sucks-- I'd much rather see a batch of new folks than all the same old people we've already seen so much. I think hearing Ant's bits one more time will drive me over the edge! PS Bodden was ROBBED PPS Steven Wright rules. One of my favorites: "Last year I went fishing with Salvador Dali. He was using a dotted line. He caught every other fish." or "I was in the first submarine. Instead of a periscope, they had a kaleidoscope. "We're surrounded." There should be a Steven Wright corner...
