  1. up ...because I'd like to hear the tale of woe, too!! Other than having to wait way too long for "in stock" items, the prices and selection at the music resource seem quite good.
  2. Can anyone point me to an online list of all the various Blue Note/Conn/West Coast/RVG CD releases over the years, including the OOP stuff? Thanks!
  3. Hi vibes, Me, Mrs. Skid and the skid family youngsters always enjoy: The Art Institute of Chicago The Field Museum Shedd Aquarium Museum of Science and Industry If you're into Japanese food, there's a terrific restaurant/sushi place called Hatsuhana, at 160 E. Ontario. Chicago area Sushi bars -- mark
  4. December 27? Ya little whiner! Us REAL men wait WEEKS to get our orders from The Music Resource. B) Unfortunately, my experience with The Music Resource wasn't much better. The order that I placed on Nov 6, for five CD's that were all "in stock", finally arrived more than three weeks later. I think I'm just spoiled by the standard set by Amazon, Buy.com, etc., where you order something and it arrives within a few days. As much as I *want* to like The Music Resource (IIRC, doesn't Jamey Aebersold have something to do with this company?), the time it takes for stuff to arrive is just unacceptable. After seeing many good recommendations, I just ordered a bunch of discs from CDUniverse yesterday. Prices were quite good, and I'm hoping to get this sometime before February!!
  5. It's actually a 4GB hard drive. When I first read this, I thought they had figured out how to get 4GB *flash* memory in a player for $249. Might be a few years before that happens... I'm a big fan of the Archos Jukebox (20GB HD, paid around $200 for it), but this iPod looks really cool. Three dumb questions: 1. Does it play "standard" MP3 files? 2. Does it need any special software to run under Windows? There appears to be a Windows version of the new unit. 3. Does it show up as a standard, "removable" hard drive when plugged in? It's USB 2.0, I'm assuming. The reason I like the Archos so much is that the answer to the above questions is yes, no, yes. The (small) downside is that it's a bit bulky.
  6. Just wanted to put in a good word for Hank -- I bought 2 cds on Friday, and they arrived today, in "spotless shape", as advertised. Thanks, Hank.
  7. brownie said it well – this is a great Internet community. For me, it's been a great place to learn all kinds of new things about jazz, and also to be turned on to some great new music that I probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise. It's really nice (especially when living in an area where there aren't very many jazz fans) to be able to read and discuss things with knowledgeable people from all over the world. Thanks for putting this all together, b3-er! Special thanks to Chuck Nessa for “Snurdy McGurdy”. The music is fantastic, and being able to hear and discuss it with him in person was wonderful. Chuck's hospitality was much appreciated. Also, a big “thank you” to Joe G. for inviting me to a terrific concert, and for his help and advice on my guitar playing. Last, but definitely not least, I'm deeply indebted to Upright Bill for introducing me to jazz, and also to the challenging and rewarding world of jazz guitar. -- Mark
  8. Thanks, Jim and Chuck. My first guess was Roscoe's daughter; it sure is nice to know the story behind the title and the picture. I was wondering why she wasn't wearing her dancin' shoes! There's no need to apologize, Chuck. Obviously, many people have recognized the beauty in this recording, and it means a great deal to all of us, as well.
  9. Upright Bill and I have used some of the Aebersold books as part of our duo (guitar/bass) practice sessions. This really works well for me, as I can practice with the CD's by myself to get a general feel for the songs, before we try to play them as a duo. Volume 54 (Maiden Voyage) and Volume 70 (Killer Joe) are good places to start. I also really enjoyed Volume 78 (Holiday Jazz Classics), but I've had enough Christmas music at this point. Another Aebersold volume I've found quite useful is #3 (The II/V7/I Progression). This one really helped me learn both major and minor II-V-I's in all keys.
  10. ...or decaf!!! (that's all we had this morning. ouch!)
  11. Miles Davis - At the Blackhawk, Complete. Plus, Miles/Quincy Troupe autobiography, which I've already read (borrowed from Upright Bill), but will probably read it again soon.
  12. *bump* I recently purchased this from Chuck -- this is an amazing recording. This is truly unlike anything I've ever heard before. Thanks, Chuck, for expanding my horizons. I'm not very good at describing or critiquing jazz records, but one thing comes though loud and clear: joy. Definitely a fun, joyous, exciting, surprising, unique 40 minutes of music. For the record, Chuck, can you tell us the story behind the title, and the happy young lady on the cover?
  13. Sorry 'bout that, but that's one of my all time favorites. "Farting Preacher II: Fart Harder" isn't quite as funny as the first one -- I couldn't find a link to the original. "The most unusual feeling just went through me..... Praise God!!"
  14. Robert Tilton is almost as bad my other favorite TV preacher: John Hagee: Watching him going off on rants about evil things like Harry Potter books never ceases to amuse me. Speaking of Robert Tilton, have you guys seen this: Farting Preacher
  15. Well, I actually *like* approximately 9.4319% of all rap, but I don't see what's so special about this one*.... Am I missing something?? *(Aside from her big breasteses and ass-cleavage) Seriously, this just seems like most other rap videos, with the difference that the almost naked female is rapping instead of hanging out in the hot tub.
  16. Upright Bill passed this along a few days ago.... and I'm still laughing!!: -- Norm MacDonald
  17. Ah!! Now when the next price increase comes along, I'll know it was because Bill needs more jazz CDs!!!!
  18. I'll add votes for both Grant Green's Am I Blue and Donald Byrd's Slow Drag, which I just happened to purchase at the same time. I need to give both of those repeated listenings before completely making up my wind, but neither really *hit me* initially. However, the other CD that was purchased at the same time was Passing Ships, which more than makes up for the minor letdown of the other two. The title tune on Slow Drag, with it's "Yo Mama!" thing, just kills me!! And to think that this pre-dates the Snoop-D-O-double-Gizzle by almost thirty years!!
  19. Thanks for having us, Chuck! I had a great time. For the record, my December CD budget is now officially in the red. Chuck played some *great* music for us, and I just couldn't walk away empty handed: Air - Air Time (I'll need to revisit the comments in the AOW) Roscoe Mitchell - Snurdy McGurdy (*wonderful* stuff!) Charlie Rouse, Red Rodney - Social Call Kenny Barron - New York Attitude Mingus - West Coast 1945-49 Jim -- I was hoping to make your show tomorrow, but holiday stuff has gotten in the way. Bill and I are planning on coming out when you guys play UICA in January. B) -- Mark
  20. That's scary, but Jazz's clown is truly disturbing. Isn't that from a Stephen King movie? (actually, your new avatar is more funny than scary, considering it's source! )
  21. I agree, it is frustrating. Another remark which I find discouraging is the "well, it's OK, but it all sounds the same to me" comment -- which I just heard my wife say this evening. I think that might be one reason why some people consider it background music. The lack of vocals probably contributes as well. After playing some selections by Cedar Walton, Cannonball, Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, and Organissimo -- I was a little surprised by that comment. It sure doesn't sound all the same to me.
  22. Gotta say “thanks again” to Joe for putting this outing together. I had not heard about the concert until Joe's posting in the “Live Shows & Festivals” area. Joe & Chuck - It was really nice meeting you both, and Chuck's wife Ann, as well. I really enjoyed the drinks and conversation at the bar, even with the pretty awful country music in the background. I'm really looking forward to driving up to Chuck's sometime to buy some CD's – one of the previous AOW's (Air Time) is high on my list, and also Roscoe Mitchell's “"Snurdy McGurdy”. The concert was excellent! “Unique take on the guitar trio” describes it perfectly, Joe. It's very hard to categorize Brad's trio, but unique and eclectic probably comes close. One song had a distinct reggae feel to it, and I didn't realize how different it really was until Joe pointed out that it was “reggae in 7, wow!”. Wow, indeed! Hanging out with Brad and the guys after was very cool. Brad is a very nice guy, and seemed genuinely grateful that we had come out to see him. My buddy Bill even got to “talk shop” for awhile with the bassist, John Hebert. All of us picked up Brad's latest CD; I'm looking forward to delving into that one! BTW, Joe's description of the after-the-show meeting with Brad is *exactly* how it went down. I think I even heard Brad mutter something that sounded like “I'M NOT WORTHY! I'M NOT WORTHY!” upon first spotting Joe in the crowd. And Joe, thanks for taking the time to give me advice and guidance on my guitar playing. I really like what you do live and on the CD – “I'M NOT WORTHY!!”. B)
