Four out of five dentists surveyed thought it would sound great in their office!

Reptet, Warne Marsh on the radio tonight
Uncle Skid replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
B) Thanks, ghost. What I've heard so far sounds great! I used a "stream ripper" so I could "tape" the show to listen to it later. It's a 56MB mp3 file, but it also includes about a half hour before and after your show. If anybody wants a copy (and if it's OK with ghost), let me know. -
I've been thinking about this lately, and while I can certainly understand the reasons for wanting the nicer packaging, the lower prices are extremely tempting. I may regret it years later, but for now, I'm going cheap. Same music, half the price. Or better yet, I can buy two box sets for the price of one of the metal spine issues. Does anybody have a link that summarizes which individual CDs are contained in each of the box sets?

I shoplifted at Border's today

I think you have just summed up what's wrong with corporate America in general -- independent thinking is discouraged, it's all about predictibility. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I would much rather buy music from a knowledgeable staff like yours as opposed to people who are trained in fake smiles and canned greetings. I bet all these problems could be fixed with a better "mission statement" or something... -
Randy, I don't really know what to say -- but her love for jazz can certainly be seen and heard in your playing. I've only seen you guys play a few times, but every time, your love for and dedication to this music shines brightly. I'm sure she was very proud of all of your accomplishments. Mark

Organissimo's New Designated Driver

He loves you, just the way you are.* *Even though you spend way too much money on Jazz CDs, and spend way too much time on internet jazz forums. -
Hey, thanks for the tip, neighbor!

Guitar players, whom do you, listen to?
Uncle Skid replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Musician's Forum
I love listening to piano players, especially for comping ideas. I'm obsessed by Cedar Walton -- and I'm usually thinking "WWCD?" while comping. His voicings always sound great, but it's the rhythmic placement and use of space that always makes my ears perk up. -
I'm looking forward to the more knowledgeable board members weighing in on this, but in the mean time... I can always tell Wes Montgomery by his use of octaves. Essentially, this technique is simply doubling a melody line with the octave above or below it -- check out "D-Natural Blues" or "Polka & Moonbeams" on "Incredible Jazz Guitar" for great examples of this. In fact, this technique is so heavily associated with Wes that most guitarists can't use it extensively without being immediately compared to him. Edited to add: also check out the intro on "Blue Roz" on "Bags Meets Wes".

Congratulations, Al! -
Paper Lace - "The Night Chicago Died" God, I hate that song. One of the kids in my neighborhood had that 45, and played the piss out of it every time we were at his house. It's taken 30 years to purge my memory of that song, and now it's back.... argh!! How about some late 70's disco dreck: Alicia Bridges - "I Love the Nightlife" (Action ... I got so much to give. I want to give it. I want to get some too.) Foxy - "Get Off" Chic - "Le Freak" I also had Chicago and Boston (what is it with bands named after cities?), but not the 45's -- paper route money bought the entire LPs!

Thanks, Rooster. If both you and Chuck give it thumbs up, that's enough for me. Looking forward to the RVG coming out on July 13.

Enthusiastic second for Hazeltine's "The Classic Trio"; also, I really enjoy "Manhattan Autumn", which also features Eric Alexander.

There's always good music at Chuck's house!!! Thanks!

I picked up "Yardbird Suite - The Ultimate Charlie Parker Collection" today. I'm just barely beginning to understand the magic of Bird, and my only regret is that it took me so long to discover this wonderful music!

Rooster -- is "Black Fire" anything at all like "Passing Ships"? I didn't have any Andrew Hill until Passing Ships came out, and I absolutely love that CD! I also really like Hutcherson's "Dialog", and I'm slowly warming up to "Point of Departure". I'm curious to learn more about Andrew Hill -- and I vaguely remember reading somewhere that you're a fan?

That shouldn't be too hard -- Metallica has been ripping off nursery rhymes for years!

I saw the Jack Johnson, IASW, Bitches Brew, and Coltrane metal spine boxes today at a local retailer. There may have been others there as well. I'm not sure if the prices were reduced; the original (inflated book store) price tags were stilll on them.

Congratulations, Jim!! All the best to you, your wife, and your beautiful new daughter!

Three songs from The Cure's Disintegration (1989): Fascination Street, Pictures of You, Love Song, Lullaby. Well, OK, four songs. I don't remember if any of these truly qualifed as "popular", but they are all great tunes.

Indeed. I wonder if this type of marketing is planned way in advance, or if somebody realized that sales of these boxes had dropped off quite a bit, and only then decided to repackage and slash prices? I never bought any of the metal spine boxes simply because it was much cheaper to buy the individual CDs. At this point, having a bunch of alternate takes and additional material isn't terribly important to me. Now with these drastically reduced prices, I might have to go the box set route. The individual CD's I already have would make great gifts, especially for non-jazz loving family members! I'm still surprised about the price of the new ones -- the same CDs for about half the cost of the originals!

Jazzmatazz Upcoming Releases has the following Miles Davis Columbia/Legacy box sets listed: Miles Davis & John Coltrane - Complete Columbia Recordings - 6 CDs (Columbia/Legacy) May 4 Miles Davis & Gil Evans - Complete Columbia Studio Recordings - 6 CDs (Columbia/Legacy) May 11 Miles Davis - Miles Davis Quintet 1965-68 - 6 CDs (Columbia/Legacy) May 11 Miles Davis - Complete In Silent Way Sessions - 3 CDs (Columbia/Legacy) May 11 Miles Davis - Complete Bitches Brew Sessions - 4 CDs (Columbia/Legacy) May 11 All of these say "new edition with less expensive packaging (no metal spine)". I guess that metal spine was pretty expensive -- the 65-68 Quintet box is normally $95, the new edition is $49!! The new Miles/Coltrane edition is $53, the original one was also around $95. Does anybody know more about these? Is the lack of a metal spine the only difference?
