Just a little heads up for you guys...

The Charles Tolliver Big Band will be at the Jazz Standard in New York this week

October 19-23

Charles Tolliver - trumpet

Todd Bashore- alto sax

Billy Harper - tenor sax

Craig Handy - alto & tenor sax

Bill Saxton - tenor sax

Howard Johnson - baritone sax

Chris Albert - trumpet

David Guy - trumpet

David Weiss - trumpet

Keyon Harrold - trumpet

Clark Gayton- trombone

Joe Fiedler - trombone

Aaron Johnson - trombone

John Hicks - piano

Cecil McBee - bass

Greg Hutchinson - drums

Hope you can make it, it really is an incredible experience and as I've probably said a million times by now, one of the heaviest, most intense projects I've ever been involved in.

I sure wish I could be there for that one... I've been diggin' Charles Tolliver since the mid 70's when he did all those cookin' Music Inc sides for Strata East records..

Jimmy Hopps was the drummer back then and man did he swing hard! The piano player was Stanley Cowell, and the bass player was Cecil McBee...

I'd be interested in hearing that band again with the subsitution of Greg Hutchinson on drums for Ralph Peterson.

My Tolliver Mosaic arrived in the mail today. Contains the cuts from the original Live at Slugs albums, the original Live in Tokyo set, and three extra cuts from each. The Slugs bonus cuts are On the Nile (13:33), Ruthie's Heart (18:46), and Repitition (8:51). The Tokyo bonus cuts are Impact (7:28), Our Second Father (20:15), and Earl's World (6:24).

There goes the monthly budget. Man, I live for Tolliver-led ensembles... makes me feel especially bad about all those Black Lion sets languishing in OOP land.

Just spoke to my friend Jim Neumann who was in NY for the past several days. He caught one of the shows and said it was great!!!! The two women with him were not as excited about it as he was!!! :D

He was headin' to catch Les Paul somewhere else! (Irridium, maybe??)
