Lisle Atkinson: 1940-2019

12 posts in this topic

I found out recently that unsung bassist Lisle Atkinson passed away on March 25th. I'm familiar with him through his excellent work with Richard Wyands, Norman Simmons and Frank Strozier, but he also recorded with Horace Parlan, Nina Simone and Betty Carter, among many others.  It's a shame that his death wasn't widely reported at the time.

Thank you for the music, Mr. Atkinson, and rest in peace.

Sad news I always liked Lisle Atkinson's bass playing.

I love his contributions to Walt Dickerson's Peace on Steeplechase.

I had no idea he was that old, he was one of those guys I just subconsciously took to be always young. He played like he was!

RIP.

R.I.P:

His bass ensemble recordings were remarkable, too.

Oh no, that's horrible. I had his nephew in one of my classes, and he used to tell me stories about his Uncle. His family treated him like royalty. RIP, Mr. Atkinson...

I know Mr. Atkinson best from a record that made a huge impact on me early:  Keno Duke/Contemporaries Crest of the Wave (an excellent record with George Coleman, Frank Strozier, and Harlod Mabern).
