Posted 11 Aug 2020 Wow. RIP. Was lucky to catch Andrew Hill and Lee Konitz (separately) at the Showcase when I went to school in Chicago. Great times, both.
Posted 11 Aug 2020 Long life, long list of achievements, lives changed by all he did.
Posted 11 Aug 2020 What a great life. I can only imagine at the stories he could tell. I never did get a chance to see a show at his club during my many trips to Chicago. I saw a show at the Green Mill once but never Joe's place. I hope he left it to someone who will continue on so that I do get a chance to go there one time. Posted 11 Aug 2020 Spent many nights at the different Jazz Showcase locations. IIRC one of the first places to ban smoking by those attending. The musicians were allowed to smoke though.
Posted 11 Aug 2020 Only attended a Jazz Showcase event the year I was in Chicago for the Jazz Festival, and it was at a fancy hotel downtown, but I like how it was never a "place", it was a "thing". Pretty amazing run, and kudos to him for attempting to always keep it real, as he knew it.

RIP - 94 - What an amazing run. Saw Hill and Pharoah Sanders (separately) in their second-last location (near Grand in River North) and then visited the club quite a few times in the South Loop location. I really appreciated the Sunday matinees that were oriented towards bringing children to the club, and I brought my son several times.
Posted 11 Aug 2020 I was fortunate to go to the Jazz Showcase a couple of times when I was visiting Chicago. R.I.P. Joe
Posted 11 Aug 2020 Was there a few times every decade starting in the 70s. Besides everything else, Joe's intro speeches were always a hoot. They were kind of always the same, but somehow that was a feature, not a bug.
Posted 12 Aug 2020 I began going to the Showcase in the mid 60's when I was still in high school. He had all ages matinees. Mother Blues, a nightclub rented him some space. I got to be a regular at his various locations. God bless him for bringing a lot of incredible music to Chicago.

Posted 25 Aug 2020 Obit writer in training? ""Bennie Goodman"... "Charlie Parker's fast, jumpy sax solos..." Good that they took note of Joe's passing though.
