I have the "Stop making sense" DVD and that's enough Talking Heads for me, but I will certainly get this:

Re-issue "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" CD

Posted Wednesday, 11 January, 2006 by francey

The long-awaited re-issue of David Byrne and Brian Eno's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" is scheduled for release in the US on march 7.

The CD contains remastered versions of the original album tracks (sans "Qu'ran", which was only available on the first issues of the album and removed for later pressings because of sampled parts from the Quran) plus previously unreleased bonus tracks:

1. America Is Waiting

2. Mea Culpa

3. Regiment

4. Help Me Somebody

5. The Jezebel Spirit

6. Very, Very Hungry

7. Moonlight in Glory

8. The Carrier

9. A Secret Life

10. Come with Us

11. Mountain of Needles

Bonus tracks:

12. Pitch to Voltage

13. Two Against Three

14. Vocal Outtakes

15. New Feet

16. Defiant

17. Number 8 Mix

18. Solo Guitar with Tin Foil

When MLITBOG was originally released, a bootleg LP surfaced with some unreleased tracks (including the original version of "Jezebel Spirit" with Kathrin Kuhlman smaples) and alternative versions with weird titles. It's not sure if these tracks are featured on the new CD or if this is 'new' unreleased material.

I had no idea that Byrne and Eno took away controversial tracks on MLitBoG.

This is currently being discussed on that forum where folks get into their music WAY more seriously than we ever could ;)

They only removed 'Qu'ran' in the UK. Until now, it's always been available on all US editions of the album. It was yanked in England before the CD came out; as far as I know, there is no UK CD that includes the track. Both the UK and US CDs include the 'Very, Very Hungry' track, which was originally one of the b-sides of the 'Jezebel Spirit' 12" single (the other b-side was an LP track).

I had no idea that Byrne and Eno took away controversial tracks on MLitBoG. Boughtthat album when it came out and picked up the CD way back when as well. Are these now sought after collectabilia? I rather doubt it, but...

yeah, not so much. i see used LP copies all the time for less than ten bucks...making it not unlike John Cale & Terry Riley's Church of Anthrax in that both records are too abstract to win over fans of the pop side of the collabo (TH/Cale) yet, at the same time, not quite abstract enough for the "experimental" (Eno/Riley) camp.

sorry I didn't look here before......I was just joking and wanted to see the reaction of "you" all. Of course there should be non jazz related topics but my narrow minded mood of the first posting was indeed because of the jazz -reissues threat fixation (do I make myself clear?). But the reactions are so mild I won't bother try to smoke you out!!!!!

In October, I was in a Best Buy

with my 15% off coupons looking

thru the boxsets. So, I decided to

pick up the "Brick" then...BUT

I'm standing there looking at the

Creedence boxset and it has no price,

but there's a UPC sticker that looks like it

had lost it's way from something else?

Me: Could you tell me how much this is?

Best Buy Guy: It says here that it's $16.98.

Me: $16.98? (!)

Best Buy Guy: Yeah, it says here that it's by a guy named Frank Zappa.

So, with my 15% coupon and the fact that

this guy doesn't care if BB makes any money or not,

he tells me that he has to ring it up as it says.

Geez, I still have the lps and there's no upgrade in my future. None at all.

I have the original CDs of Talking Heads: 77 and More Songs about Buildings and Food and don't intend to "upgrade". Besides, I have a Mark Levinson CD transport and signal processor and ML advised not to play dualdiscs, since these might cause severe damage.

That’s interesting; I’d always heard that vinyl pressed in the late 70’s and early 80’s wasn’t all that good quality. Does it depend on the setup one has?

In any case, I never cared for the old CD versions and have been hoping for sonic upgrades. From what I hear, even the 2.0 mixes are still eons better than their current counterparts.

There were some really crappy versions from Spain that were making the rounds then.

Anyone own the Rauschenberg version of Speaking In Tongues?

As a big fan of RR, I used to collect as many as I could find.

I think that I have 5 or 6 around here.

What I meant was, they sound "good enough" to my ears. I'm used to the records, so I'm satisfied with them. If I ever heard the new CD/DVD remaster, I'd probably hunger for them and hate my old albums...so, I'll do my best to avoid hearing the new editions. Shouldn't be hard. Besides, I spend enough money (some would say more than enough) buying multiple editions of various jazz albums. Got to draw the line somewhere, unless I suddenly become a billionaire. But for those who want the upgrade, more power to 'em!

Longtime Heads fan here, from around the time of Fear of Music (1979? That would have made me 12! )

IIRC, British pressings of Remain in Light were notoriously poor. I taped that one from a music library and didn't actually get round to buying it until it was issued on CD many years later. I really must search out the CD of The Name of This Band Is..., an album I always liked.

Somewhere in my pile of (these days unplayed) audio tapes I have a cassette of a live session broadcast on BBC tv from around (I guess) 1981 with a particularly out-there Adrian Belew on guitar. I might have to hunt that down.

If it hadn't been for Talking Heads and Prince I probably wouldn't have listened to any pop music during the eighties.

Oh, and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was waaaaay ahead of its time. I played it a couple of months ago and was stuck by how fresh (some, if by no means all) it still sounds.

Didn't one of the other tracks run into some problems? I vaguely recall an American minister causing a fuss... could be wrong.

I think you'd better check if your player does accept/play dualdiscs before you pick up any. I've heard several reports about problems and damage caused by dualdiscs, but haven't had any experience with them myself.

Edited to correct a spelling error.

great news Al!

i was diappointed with the 5.1 mixes on the DVD but Stop Making Sense is too damn good :D

one of the greatest things about my Talking Heads addiction was that my sister used to hate them so i always had a motivation to listen to their albums :g

i haven't experienced so far any dual disc as Marantz strongly recommends to stay away from them

Re-issue "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" CD

Thanks for posting this info!

Bill Laswell on MLITBOG:

Brian Eno and David Byrne’s My Life In The Bush of Ghosts. [bassist/arranger, 1981, Sire]

That was 1979—a long time ago. I used to live on 18th Street and Brian Eno used to sort of live next door. So, everyday I would go out and play, try to get gigs and try to get started. I would see Eno everyday and say "Get me a gig. Let me do some recording. What’s up?" I was just trying to hustle anybody I could. I started playing in clubs and doing things and he would see that I was playing around. One day, he said "Okay, I’m doing a session, come over to RPM Studio on 12th Street." The night before, I was playing at CBGB with Denardo Coleman, who’s Ornette Coleman’s son. They took all my equipment back to the East Village and my bass got stolen out of the van, so I had no instrument. I borrowed an instrument from a kid. I said "I’m doing a session tomorrow with these guys Brian Eno and David Byrne, bring me a bass! I don’t have a bass!" So this guy brought one from the Bronx to me and it was a cheap bass with a sticker on it that said Devo! [laughs] It was kind of embarrassing. So, I’ve got this bass and I brought it in and I didn’t even know how to play it. I think David Van Tiegham was playing drums and there was a girl they found in Western Square Park playing congas. She kept playing these sort of funk beats and I knew the rhythm, so I played with her. When we started, they would always say "No, no. This is too syncopated. We want to do a very European record." They were looking for Neu or Can—this very European sound. But this girl kept playing this stuff and I kept playing with her. To be honest, she’s the one that started that whole feel that made Bush of Ghosts. It turned out to be this very syncopated, Black music-related record. Before that, that wasn’t really their concept at all. So, we did that for a few days and then I came back to them at Blue Rock Studio and played again, and the record came out after that.
