I'm not going to get into a further discussion of RVG CDs - We've been there and done that. However, if it weren't for that "geriatric clown", you'd have very few BN SMH releases to listen to. Or you might buy a decent turntable and pick up a few King, Music Matters, Analogue Productions, whatever LPs and hear what that "geritric clown" did in his younger days. As someone who has done work with RVG, I find this revolting. Rudy deserves much better than this from "internet experts".

Hm. I'd guess this is the concert I attended at Constellation.

No I meant an old regular contributor (and mail order customer) from Buffalo who left (maybe after trying to rip me a new one) and I figured he was still here. He was a great addition to the conversations of post '60s music and I miss him. -
Many thanks for this piece of history.

Draft Mag: "Light" beers that are good
Chuck Nessa replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Why would anyone care about "light" beers? If you like beer, you like beer. -
In the early '80s I met a fellow at the Jazz Record Mart looking for Booker Little records. He said Booker was his father. Seemed like a humble guy.

New Directions was recorded in June of '78. Don't see it being released in the Summer.

Memory is not too faulty, beyond typing this info earlier. :-0

I heard Hardman with Blakey in the late '70s at Robert's Show lounge in Chicago. I think Ramon Morris was in the band. I also heard him lead a band, again with Morris (if memory serves) at an incarnation of the Five Spot around the same time. I also really liked his Muse lps, poorly served on cd. I hired Bill, Junior Cook, Lou Donaldson and Ray Crawford for a Jimmy Smith Jam Session at the Chicago Jazz Festival. I wanted Blakey, but he was touring in Japan at the time. It was broadcast and if anyone can supply a recording I'd be very pleased.

Don't remember the release dates but the first DeJohnette session was recorded a month after Nice Guys. History is a bitch. edit to add the catalog numbers: New Directions ECM 1128, Nice Guys ECM 1126.

Indeed they did - stuff like their Tubby Hayes box is most welcome. Guess I need the Harriott eventually, too ... granted I'd prefer more Dutton/Vocalion reissues (and hey, some of those might indeed have been surpassed before release by - other - PD reissues ... and hey again, that scenario hurts me when it's about small labels, call me sentimental, but I still think I made a point or two above that remain valid, even if we give the majors the finger, which I'm most ready to do). Not sure, wasn't the Spotlite set around for most of the time? In fact it might still be around:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000026QCO/ Now for the Savoys ... Yes Spotlite was first but is only the Dial of course. The Savoys were more of a challenge... In my experience the bulk of Savoys have been around almost constantly from the mid '50s.

Sam is a fine instrumentalist and arranger/composer. I have heard her in Reptet a few times and was always impressed. Looking forward to the new disc.

Universal Music Italia box sets
Chuck Nessa replied to Fer Urbina's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That'd mean the box was produced by Fantasy originally, and that it has been released in Europe by the international branch of Universal, which is based in London. From what I've seen, this would be a Europe-only release, hence an import in the US and Japan. From what a friend's told me, boxes like the Jarrett, with a © line referring especifically to Italy, would mean a product for the local market which can also be exported to others. In practical terms, this would normally imply fewer units manufactured. Given that these guys own the masters they're releasing, I don't think it has anything to do with PD, Ubu. F Actually it might. Since these packages are being manufactured and marketed in the EU, they might avoid contractual obligations from the US. Just wondering. -
Interesting piece. I have some issues with it but.... Nice to see some attention paid. FWIW, I provided the scan of the ECM promo shot at the front of the piece. Seems darker than my print. ECM didn't have it anymore. It is and alternate of the cover shot by the great photographer Roberto Masotti.

Things programmers know that maybe you don't
Chuck Nessa replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
this is old news. -
Beyond the "rights" issue, one huge problem is someone with almost no "skin in the game" is competing with you for the listener's dollar. Comfort, aka nostalgia is much easier to sell and with the profit advantage, you lose big time.
