Jazz musicians' wit and humor. Examples?
Chuck Nessa replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Musician's Forum
Last Friday night I was talking to Von Freeman between sets at the Green Mill. Near the end of the conversation he said "I'll tell George you said 'hello'". I asked how George was doing and Von responded "He's 80 years old!". I asked Von how old he was now and he said "85" and chuckled. I love that man. -
Happy Happy. Bet your parents were ticked they didn't get that deduction a year earlier.

What did you listen to most in 2007?
Chuck Nessa replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Damn near everything else I listened to was the result of a moral mandate. -
If your pursuits don't result in growth, why not die? Otherwise, eat donuts.

I was wrong. Got the "trio beyond" set and thought it sucked. Also got the recent Roscoe Mitchell disc and have not had time to listem. -

Don't think I have listened to a single ECM record in about 3 years. Not proud, just a fact. But, I'm not on their promo list. -
Dispelling Economic Myths #2: The Gold Standard
Chuck Nessa replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Are we contributing to a paper Guy needs to write? -
Not really complex. Roscoe and I own Nonaah. It has not been reissued yet for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons are financial, some artistic and some logistical. When it finally comes on the marketplace it will contain a significant number of previously unreleased performances and will be a 24 bit remix of the 8 channel tapes. This takes time and money. Free downloads of the lps makes me less likely to spend the big bucks (for me) to do the music "right". Nobody really deserves to hear anything not uttered from themselves.

have you been banned by a buffet?
Chuck Nessa replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
When we lived in Madison I had a customer/friend well over the 300 lb mark. He kept after me to go to an "all you can eat" buffet on the outskirts of town. After about a year I gave in so Ann and I went with him. As we entered, the hostess said "Hello Alan" and he announced to us "They are tricky here - they have the bread and potatoes first - they are cheap and fill you up. Wait 'til you get to the meat and fill your plate. He piled that stuff up about 5 inches high and after we were done eating we had to wait about half an hour for him to finish. Then he went to the dessert table. Nice guy, might be dead now. -
Expanding one's interests horizontally or backwards is the usual (musical mass population) trend. "I like '70s bluegrass so I might like George Jones". "I like '70s fusion so there might be something in 'serious' disco", "I like '50s hard bop so maybe I should check out early r & b". "I like Beethoven so I should probably check out Czerny". "I like Jelly Roll so maybe I should check out Charlie Patton". Amazing how predictable these choices are. PLEASE, I'm not saying this is bad. It just disappoints me. You can do that stuff AND move "forward" too. You can even get to the point where you can reject "new stuff" and move on.................

Ella Fitzgerald Complete Songbooks set?
Chuck Nessa replied to Nutty's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Back in the early days of Yourmusic (talking 'bout the $4.99 days) I got the set for $79.84. After a quick flurry of checking out the mastering job the box went on the shelf and there it sits. Glad I have it. Too much music, too little time. -

Between the holidays I read Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O'Nan. Sweet little read.

Can't shake the "moderator" tag, huh?

Nah, I remember.

I enjoyed those posts and found them enlightening. Too bad you couldn't move them to another thread. Now it will be more difficult to remember why I distrust Mike somebody from MN. Though the "flirting thread" should have been enough.
