Basie, Fitzgerald added to Jazz Hall of Fame Benny Goodman also honored NEW YORK - Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Goodman head this year’s class of 12 inductees to the Nesuhi Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame, which opened last fall at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s new home in the Time Warner Center. The other 2005 inductees, announced Monday, include trumpeter Roy Eldridge, pianist Earl “Fatha” Hines, alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Basie band drummer Jo “Papa Jo” Jones, bassist-bandleader-composer Charles Mingus, cornetist Joe “King” Oliver, who brought Louis Armstrong north to Chicago from New Orleans in 1922, and Thomas “Fats” Waller, the stride pianist and singer who wrote hit tunes such as “Ain’t Misbehavin” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” Pioneering bebop drummer Max Roach and tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins became the first living inductees. The Jazz Hall of Fame is named after the Turkish-born Ertegun, who played a key role in developing the catalog of jazz, R&B and rock albums at Atlantic Records, the label founded by his brother Ahmet. The inductees were chosen by a 58-member panel of jazz musicians, educators and scholars from 17 countries. An induction ceremony will be held Sept. 8 at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. “These great jazz musicians set new standards for instrumental and vocal performance in the 20th century,” said trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, JALC’s artistic director, in a statement. “Their work stands as a testament to the creative power of jazz.” Last year’s inaugural group of 14 inductees included Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Billie Holiday. source: MSNBC

(CNN) -- Singer Marc Cohn, known for the 1991 smash hit "Walking in Memphis," was shot in the head Sunday during an attempted carjacking in Denver but survived, his manager said Monday. Cohn has been treated and released from Denver Health Medical Center, his manager, Karen Malluk, said in a written statement. Police said Cohn had performed at the Denver Botanical Gardens on Sunday night and was driving back to his hotel with band members when a man who was fleeing security officers tried to carjack their van. The van's driver tried to drive around the gunman, who then fired, striking Cohn, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. "Marc Cohn was shot in the head above his right temple. The bullet was lodged in his head but has since been taken out," Malluk said. Cohn's road manager, Tom Dube, was injured in the attack by flying glass that hit him in the face and eye, said Malluk. Dube has also been released from the hospital. Police interviewed Cohn and the other band members Monday morning, Jackson said. The suspect, identified as wanted felon Joseph Yacten, remains on the loose. Jackson said Yacten had been arrested in late June on possession of a controlled substance and possession of a weapon by a previous felon. The man, who was out on $25,000 bond, was to have appeared in court July 15 but failed to show up, Jackson said. He said that before the shooting, the gunman had tried to use a credit card at a nearby hotel but then immediately ran from the building. He tried to carjack another vehicle as security guards pursued him, and then came across Cohn's vehicle. He was last seen driving a 2005 gold Subaru Forester, with Colorado license plate 207 KUM. Cohn has been co-headlining a tour with Suzanne Vega at sites across the nation. The tour has been postponed, but Malluk said, "Marc will do his best to reschedule the concerts after he has fully recovered from this incident. Suzanne has agreed to join him for the rescheduled dates." Cohn won the 1991 Grammy for Best New Artist, the same year his "Walking in Memphis" was a chart-topper. He is married to ABC News correspondent and 20/20 co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas.

My ears have been really busy lately. I've been working my way through the JJ Mosaic and just got the most recent batch of RVGs. It's my first time for all the material except for Boss Horn which is part of the Mitchel Mosaic. Got the RVGs going at work today and like them all.

Not to be confused with this one.

I'm remembering the long order processing time and counting up my recent purchases in order to avoid this one. Where's that cash-flying-out-of-the-wallet smilie?

If you had said "pulled out" you would have earned a perfect 10!

OK... I'll admit it. I skipped the last 6 minutes of Cherry to move on. Partly because of the excitment of 6 new discs and partly because I was beginning to lose my lock on the music. It was just too much. BTW is Don Cherry wearing a Cosby sweater on the cover... a CAAAAWWWS-by sweater.

Got this batch today. Attacking them in this order: Symphony For Improvisers Music From The Connection Sunday Mornin' Fuego Inventions & Dimensions The Big Beat So far, Don Cherry is an assault on the senses, but there does seem to be a method to the madness. A few years ago I would have already hit DISC SKIP and been on about my way, but I'm gonna stick it out - mostly because the volume is down and I am working - not sure if I would have the same tolerance level were I concentrating on the music listening on my main system..... only time will tell. I'm excited about this batch (and the next one) because this is the first time for me to own these in any form. That hasn't been the case for some of the recent batches.

Sounds like my uncle. He raises them and breeds them to come up with new "variations". Just run-of-the-mill stuff - nothing like Dr. Moreau.

RIP Mr. Doohan. I only wish had "more power" to deal with all of the headlines like "Beam me up", "Scotty Boldly Goes", "Doohan heads for the final frontier" - I mean c'mon. It's not that clever folks. fixed a typo

I saw this on Slashdot.org: When Darth Vader decided to take over the universe, he decided he needed a really big gun.... a really very big gun indeed, a gun so big it could destroy an entire planet in a single shot. With this in mind he built the Death Star, witnesses at the time often confused it with a small moon, so you get some idea of it's size... and colour. In my batchelor days I decided I needed a subwoofer for my lounge, a subwoofer so powerful it could loosen fillings, shake out the colesteral from my arteries and generally make a lot of noise. It seemed to me that the Death Star, ignoring the weakness that ultimately lead to it's complete destruction, was a pretty good design... so I made my own (with a lot of help from my then housemate). I'm no longer a batchelor, I no longer live in a detached house in the middle of nowhere, so the subwoofer is offered here for sale. Death Star subwoofer
