I grew up with vocal jazz in our house because my mother was a jazz vocalist until the late 1960's. She always had her Webcor stereo record player fired up and swinging.. I remember her listening to Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Dakota Staton, Ella Fitzgerald, June Christy, Blossom Deary, Mose Allison, Jack Sheldon, and especially Carmen McRae and Nancy Wilson. I particularly remember the Summer of 1961, around the time when the NancyWilson /Cannonball Adderly Quintet album came out on Capitol Records. My mom wore that record out! It is to this day one of the greatest Jazz recordings ever made.. Everything Nancy sings on this album is fresh, and Cannonball, brother Nat, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes play soulfully on every track. The other vocal Jazz album that got equal play around our house at the time was the Camen McRae album released on Columbia entitled, "Carmen McRae Sings Lover Man And Other Billie Holiday Classics".. This record cooks from start to finish! Joining Carmen on this record date was tenor man Eddy "Lockjaw" Davis. The perfect match for Carmen, who I always felt phrased like a soulful tenor player. Upon listening to this recording it becomes obvious how deeply Carmen and "Jaws" emotionally inspired each other as well as the other musicians on the session. The arrangements and musicianship are superb! Both of these albums have been re-issued and deserve a serious listen! Also, there is a male Jazz vocalist of note out of Detroit by the name of Harvey Thompson. Harvey has a style and range somewhat like Johnny Hartman or Joe williams and can sing in a falsetto range as well. Harvey is not only a dynamic singer with impeccable phrasing and intonation, he is also a very charismatic entertainer as well. Harvey has 2 Cds out, the latest one was recently recorded in Japan and hopefully will be available on the internet somewhere. Harvey Thompson is yet to be signed by a US label and his current success and notoriety are mostly in Europe and Japan. Harvey will be joining Organissimo for a 5 day Summer tour from June 26th to June 30th. If anyone is interested contact me or B3er for additional tour info. All the gigs are going to be in northern and west Michigan

Me too! I'd pay twice that amount! Roy Haynes, aka "Snap, Crackle, & Pop" has, and continues to be a great source of inspiration... He was playing with a broader sense of independance, creativity, and polyrhythmic phrasing than most of the other drummers of the time going way back to the late 40's. Listen to some of the recordings he played on with Bird. Even then he wasn't just playing 2 & 4 on the hihat!

There is definitely a fine art to learning how to SPELL 'the talk'. And actually, that's one of the things I like about on-line conversations, is finding things in print, that you'd normally only ever expect to 'hear'. As MasterCard would say... "Priceless'!!! A lot of kids can't spell... Some of my 20 something nephews can barely fill out a job app...

----Original Message] My name is Bradley and ive been a fan of your band for about 4 months now. your perspective on music from what I hear is extremely free. When I listen It trips me out because our approach is simillar but different because we are different people.I have been playing drums for about 8 years and I really need to fing a nich where people can let me express myself in an open playing atmosphere where all thoughts and feelings are on the table, and where all the governings of society are gone. It means the world to me to be able to sit in with you guys and I hope you wouldn't mind if I bring my kit to one of your gigs set it up early and wait out the evening to find an opportunity to play with all of you.Im going to skip my graduation to come see yawl play tonight at billys I hope you dont mind if I bring my jazz kit I will be there early. Bradley; I really appreciate your enthusiasm and would be interested in meeting you. Note; We are not at Billy's tonight so don't skip your graduation! We play the first Tuesday of every month. Also, the idea of you bringing your drum kit won't work. First of all, I don't know you, there's no room onstage for another kit, and we don't usually have people we don't know sitting in unless they are horn players who know our tunes. I would be interested in hearing you play! Send me a tape or CD. Or let me know if you play somewhere...

Roy Haynes IS DA MAN! He is, or is close to 80 now and still playin the way he does!! ... Must be an alien from the planet Groove.. He is always on and playin' great! First time I saw him was with Chick Corea and Miroslav Vitous in a ski resort in Traverse city of all places back in Dec 1982.

I positively agree with this statement. I've spun this disc about three times thru since receiving it on Monday and must say it's a great debut album. Some hip playing by all involved, especially Joe. I really like the Jimmy Smith tune, it's got a cool bridge/channel? to it; that section seems to bring out even more superlative playing from Jim and Joe in their solos. 'Life Wish' has definitely grown on me; at first it seemed dull but after repeated listenings I noticed deeper stuff going on. Love the two funkier tunes in the middle of the track order too: 'Blake's Shake' and 'You Don't Want To Do That'. Anyone who's on the fence about this one should, as Chuck says, do themselves (and Organissimo) a favor and check it out. Great work, lads! WHAT ABOUT THE DRUMMER? HeHe...."Some hip playing by all involved", is good enough for me....... Thanks for the nice review pryan. I'm glad you're enjoying the CD. "Life Wish" does grow on people. There's a tune Pat Metheny would probably be interested in...

Those guyz are the shit! I've worked with both E.Dog and Bill Heid at different times... I first worked with Heid in a black club in Lansing, Mi in the early 80's...About 4 years ago I had a gig with Heid and a Detroit tenor player. We had a great time even though Bill was playin' a cheezy Casio keyboard. E. Dog used to come up to Grand Rapids, Mi and play hard bop gigs with me. He's deep and plays very soulfully. And the most fascinating fact about Scott Peterson is that he has Cystic Fibrosis and most people afficted with this disease don't live past their 30's or 40's and Scott is still doing great and playin' his ass off!! I truly believe it's due to his great love of playing music... To quote Sun Ra, "Music is the healing force of the Universe"

BAND SEEKING MANAGER...
randissimo replied to randissimo's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
WE'RE STILL IN DIRE NEED OF... (Since I started this post started little has changed)... A. Ambitious and honest Management B. Good distribution for the Cd (national & international) C. Lots of magazine publicity (and Cd reviews) D. Getting the Cd to someone with influence and connections E. And GIGS to pay off the CD debt so we can start recording another CD We're ready and willing to travel the US and internationally to play. WE NEED GIGS! Right now we're only working 1 to 2 nights a month and we're approaching Summer.. Is there anybody out there?? -
Thanks Ghost.. It's getting good airplay in Mich and nationwide every weekend on Wilke's show. We just need to get the CD in the right hands. We need magazine publicity, good distribution, a good manager, and GIGS! We really want to get out in the world and play!! Right now we're only working one Tuesday a month in GR Michigan and Cds sales have slowed down. I think some people hearing us on the radio don't know who we are or how to get our Cd..

Greetings, oh Randy one, Confession time: Because of the loads of CDs I get every week now...most of them either crap or just not ready for prime-time, .. I hadn't listened to your CD until today. NOW to be exact. It's really excellent in every respect: variety, compositions, recording quality and high level of playing. Why even the drummer sounds really good! This is sure not your typical Organ trio/quartet. You''re all so musical and fresh sounding, and yet with enough of the tradition intact to feel like home when you want to. Congratulations. It's obvious that a lot of time and thought went into this band. It was nice to hear Blake with you guys too. I think he's very underrated. I met him in '92 when we did a recording project with Hargrove for a week, and then renewed our connection when he was with McBride last year and this year. A beautiful spirit too. I get Parlocha's playlist every week. I'll be looking for you guys and copy you if I see you. If I don't, I'll call Bob. Have you sent this to Chuy Varela at KCSM? Unfortunately, they don't publish a playlist, so I don't know if you're on there. Things are slow and sad out here right now. the week before Pearl's died, Al Plank died. There was a big session/wake at Pearl's, but that was the day we were recording McBride, so I missed it. Only piano players, bass players and singers seem to be working with regularity. The jazz gigs all pay a bill or less and all of them are now in restaurants. Some more hospitable than others, of course. I played at the Coffee Mill in Oakland last Sunday with Jim Grantham. three hours for $30.00 and I suspect that most of that came out of Jim's pocket. I've also started filling in for Paul VW at the Jazz School in Berkeley. He and brother John W. teach a class for pianists and guitar players so they can learn how to play with a bass player and drummer. As you can imagine...I've had LOT'S to say! I really enjoy that gig. Otherwise, it's been my radio stuff and my concert series at Filoli and some producing that's kept the wolf from the door. Have you heard Latin Tinge "Isla"? That's the latest and by far the best by them. I'm very proud of our work on that; strong playing and the best sound I've ever gotten on a CD. I'd send you a copy but I don't got no mo. Levine is on the road doing workshops for another few weeks, so I can't get more till he gets back. It got up to #18 in national airplay. You sound really good, Randyroonie. I'm not surprised, of course. You're a credit to your race. I see Diane Schur will be at Yoshi's in early June. I guess that means I'll actually get to reconnect with your cuz. Very cool. Now I must go. I'll be sure to check your website later. Love, Budley Bop

I checked out the AAJ Board and though it had some interesting posts, it has a rather gray vibe about it..

Yeah, there is a bassoonist you need to check out by the name of Paul Hansen.... The cat is BAD!!! I played a couple of jazz gigs with him in San Francisco in the late 80's. Paul plays great tenor sax as well and is an outstanding improviser. Back in the 80's he was a member of Peter Apelbaum's Hieroglyphics Ensemble, a large eclectic band of about 14 people with a sound somewhere between Sun Ra, Fela, Hermeto Pasqual, and with some of the nasty grooves of early James Brown. Check this band out. They have 2 Cds out that are definately worth a listen! More recently Paul Hansen has been featured on tours and recordings with Bela Flek. Again, the cat is BAD!!!

Happy Birthday, JoeG!
randissimo replied to AfricaBrass's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Damn Joe! Happy Birthday!!!! I wish I would have known Sunday when I saw ya! I hope you had a great day my brother! -
Wow! What an interesting thread... Thanks Joe!!!! When I first heard a Weather Report record in 1971 with the first album "Milky Way", I was blown away with Shorter & Zawinul's approach to music! ...That's the way I wanted to play!! I had been listening to Miles and Frank Zappa at that time.... I have heard Weather Report several times in concert and at one time or another have owned all of their recordings. Black Market is a magical and timeless record!

Glad you like it! Thank you for purchasing a copy...

BAND SEEKING MANAGER...
randissimo replied to randissimo's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
It either just simply never occured to Michael G. or he just hasn't had the time to plug us into the AMG.. We should never assume something like that is getting done.. Another reason why we badly need somebody with the time and resources to follow up matters of this nature. It is definately worth bringing to his attention. Let's send him an email on the subject..
