  1. I have a friend with 3 small children who isn't taking social distancing seriously. He attended a funeral that required a drive of 800+ miles and was attended by a large extended family. Knowing his kids, he certainly stopped a million times along the way there and back. He then came home and recorded a podcast in person with a friend, which could have been recorded differently. After reading an article about how a large funeral in Georgia touched off a number of infections and deaths, I hope that he and his family didn't contract the virus by being careless.
  2. The Konitz sessions with Jimmy Rowles, Leroy Vinnegar and Shelly Manne.
  3. I saw Bucky Pizzarelli twice, once with Aaron Weinstein and once with Ed Laub. I'll always remember the radiant smile he had on his face as he gleefully strummed away. He swung so hard! It was touching to hear John Pizzarelli talk so warmly about his father during a blindfold test last year. Thank you for the music, Mr. Pizzarelli, and rest in peace.
  4. With all of the passion on both sides of the Wynton debate, I think that Ellis has been lost in the shuffle a bit. That is a shame. From what I've heard, he was an elegant pianist with touch to spare. Thank you for the music, Mr. Marsalis, and rest in peace.
  5. After listening to the Marsh album, I'm now on to the Konitz/Marsh material. With all of the awful news, I needed some pure melody. The interplay between Konitz and company brings back fond memories of the times I've seen Konitz. I hope he is safely riding this out.
  6. Today's listening so far: Gary Thomas - While the Gate Is Open The Konitz live set from the Midway Lounge Joe Newman - At Count Basie's
  7. In my opinion, not recording James Spaulding as a leader was a huge missed opportunity for Blue Note.
  8. I stand corrected and deleted my comment. That was sloppy on my part.
  9. As someone who served as a mod for years, I can say that it would take less time to 'micro-scrub' a few nutty posts and the replies from one page than it would to post any of the likely dozens of posts you've made on the thread. If you don't want to devote a negligible amount of time to performing moderator duties, maybe it's time for some new blood. It'd be absurd to shut down another useful thread because you simply can't be bothered.
  10. Disc 4: Mosaic really outdid themselves with this set.
  11. Disc 2: I was lucky to find a CD set without a box or giant book for $50 a few years ago. It seems like the CD version is pretty scarce.
  12. I saw him four times, three times as a bandleader and once as part of a star-studded Brubeck tribute (I seem to recall that he played an unabashedly pretty version of 'In Your Own Sweet Way'). Although his bands could suffer from his use of inexperienced musicians, he took obvious pride in serving as a mentor. The last time I saw him was in June when he played a fiery miniature set as part of a Coltrane tribute. His band was better than I'd seen him with before. I'll remember how encouraging he was to his young bandmates that night. Thank you for the music, Mr. Roney, and rest in peace.
  13. Forget about toilet paper. I know who has been hoarding the tinfoil.
  14. Disc 4: This set is ridiculously good.
  15. I'm listening to the second half that isn't part of the incredible Chu Berry Mosaic. This is some hot Eldridge.
  16. I'm a stay-at-home dad and even I can't avoid the telecommuting revolution during the COVID crisis, which means trying to steer my mother through video visits with my daughter without ripping my hair out.
  17. The Complete Verve Stuff Smith Sessions, Disc 2: At $40 due to a battered box, this delightful Mosaic is one of my all-time Mosaic bargains.
  18. Phil Wright - Feeling Right, with Andy Simpkins, Bruno Carr and Barbara Morrison. Barbara Morrison really wows me on this one by the unsung Wright.
  19. Tom Guarna - The Wishing Stones, with Jon Cowherd, John Patitucci and Brian Blade. I'll take any combination of members of the Wayne Shorter Quartet I can get.
  20. Disc 7: I am finishing the second run through this set in the last two weeks. This has to be one of my favorite discs of the set. Half is a strings date with Russ Garcia's arrangements and the other half is a swinging quartet date with Ronnie Ball.
