  1. I was there on Monday and foolishly passed on something. If anyone is going there soon and could pick it up and mail it to me, PM me.
  2. A new purchase.
  3. The previously unreleased quartet session with Cecil Payne, Ron Carter and Roy Haynes is face-melting. Now playing: Disc 2. I hadn't heard a ton of Berry before buying this, but so far, so good.
  4. I'm starting to think that you shouldn't post on obit threads.
  5. Ah, man. When I was first getting into jazz, JC was such a great resource and Ron was a big part of that. As he studied with Alan Dawson, he even tracked down a copy of Dawson's then-rare Waltzin' with Flo for me. RIP.
  6. Wayne is a fascinating guy.
  7. Oliver Nelson Mosaic, Disc 4: This may be only the the second time I've listened to this set in the few years I've had it, but I am loving the Pee Wee Russell album.
  8. Maybe if they banned cell phones and cameras, less people would crowd the exhibit.
  9. Bill is playing in Detroit this weekend and I can't make it. It would've been a good opportunity to check out Cliff Bell's.
  10. The Tal Farlow Mosaic, through my library's streaming service. I've been intrigued by the set for years but hadn't listened to it before.
  11. My library subscribes to a streaming service called Hoopla, which allows patrons to borrow titles for 7 days. After mainly ignoring the service for years, I realized that Hoopla provides access to Universal, so I have access to several Mosaics.
  12. What an awful story. As a married father of a young child, that is the stuff of nightmares. RIP.
  13. Thanks. I found another RCA compilation, Bunny, which appears to have been released only on LP and MP3. There appears to be minimal overlap between Gangbusters, Bunny and The Pied Piper. It is a bit surprising that these appear to be the only legit reissues. Going by memory, most (if not all) of those tracks are on the Mosaic. That might be the way to go for someone on the fence about investing in the Mosaic, which is an absolute treasure trove.
  14. The highlight of my day has been when my daughter, who is about 21 months, started to sing along with Ella's scatting.
  15. I am looking for Bunny Berigan's RCA work. There is a compilation called The Pied Piper: 1934-40, but have his RCA recordings otherwise been released on CD?
  16. Disc 4: Berigan's trumpet is always riveting. This is Mosaic at its best.
  17. There is a Kickstarter project going for a new album by organist Bill Heid. The album features guitarist Perry Hughes, drummer Randy Gelispie and percussionist Kevin Jones. For those unfamiliar with Heid, check out Dark Secrets, which I consider to be a modern organ classic. I've seen Hughes lead a group in Detroit and Gelispie at MSU, and they are the real deal. Jim Alfredson is producing the record. Support Bill (and Jim) and get what should be a tasty organ album.
  18. Wayne Shorter - Joy Ryder: I am on my second listen since gabbing this on Saturday (along with Phantom Navigator and Etcetera). It's great to hear the original recording of the title track after having heard Wayne's quartet play it live. This album is much, much better than Yanow's two-star review.
  19. I stopped by a used store and found some bargains: Wayne Shorter - Etcetera, Phantom Navigator and Joy Ryder. Bennie Wallace - Bordertown Bill Charlap - Somewhere: The Music of Leonard Bernstein Joe Pass/NHØP - Chops I also bought a Louis Jordan CD that I promptly damaged beyond repair by knocking over my CD drive while I was ripping the disc. All told, with a birthday discount, I paid about $13.
  20. I purchased Disc 1 on eBay a few years ago and managed to win an auction for Discs 2-5 with the box and book today for about $43 after tax and shipping. I've been on a Pass kick lately and really like Disc 1, so I'm happy to be completing the set.
  21. I'd heard of the album, but never knew who was on it.
