  1. The campaign ends tonight and could use more backers. It's gained a lot of traction, but it needs more backers to get it over the hump.
  2. Steve Wilson has a Kickstarter campaign going for a live (from the Village Vanguard) album by Wilsonian's Grain, his group with Orrin Evans, Ugonna Okegwo and Bill Stewart. The project is nearing the deadline and could use some more backers. Although I haven't seen this band live (I've seen the members in different groups), I am a fan of Wilson and am backing the project.
  3. Welcome, 1/2 Baked! While I'll mourn the loss of the jazz-uniform avatar, I can appreciate a Jetsons reference.
  4. I somehow missed posting on this thread two months ago, but I found myself thinking about Frankie Dunlop yesterday while listening to Monk's Five Spot recordings with Coltrane and Roy Haynes (another great Monk drummer!). Dunlop was on my first Monk album, Monk's Dream, and his dancing drums really fit Monk's music and helped to draw me in. It's crazy to think that he was actually younger than Roy Haynes and had spent the last 30 years retired from the music, while Haynes is still out there kicking ass and taking names. Rest in peace, Mr. Dunlop, and thank you for the music.
  5. Discs 5-8 have been sold, but Disc 1 is still available for sale or trade.
  6. I've seen a drummer use a cajon in place of a drum throne behind a traditional kit.
  7. Looking at his credits on Allmusic, I was surprised at how many albums I have that he appeared on, as well as the sheer number of notable albums to which he contributed. Thank you for the music, Mr. Cardona, and rest in peace.
  8. I only own a few Kenny Wheeler albums (not nearly enough!), but he was such a talented, distinctive, melodically gifted musician. Thank you for the music, Mr. Wheeler, and rest in peace.
  9. The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings of Gerald Wilson and His Orchestra, Disc 5
  10. The giant booklet? No. But the discs come with the tiny booklets that have all of the personnel details. Mosaic might have spare booklets.
  11. Disc 3. I purchased the set for $45.99 after shipping a year ago. Considering how much I paid and how much enjoyment I've gotten from this set, it has to be one of the greatest bargains ever.
  12. Discs 1: $10 plus $3 shipping Shipping covers stateside only. I'd have to charge the actual amount for international shipping. If anyone has any questions about what is contained on the discs, you can view the complete discography for the set here: http://deus62.com/linkto/0170.pdf. Disc 1 contains sessions A (Paul Whiteman) through F (Eddie Miller/Jessie Price). Thanks!
  13. I only have one of his albums, In My Time, which I bought shortly after it was released. Despite enjoying that album, I somehow missed the premiere of Wilson's Detroit at the Detroit Jazz Festival 5 years ago and an appearance the following year. Although he recorded a lot over the length of his career, I'll forever regret not seeing him perform live. In an attempt to catch up on his recorded work, I've ordered a stray disc from his Mosaic set (with California Soul and Eternal Equinox). His son is a talented guitarist, composer and arranger, so Gerald Wilson's legacy will also continue on through Anthony. Thank you for the music, Mr. Wilson, and rest in peace.
  14. I hope Sonny had a great birthday, and here's wishing him many happy returns!
  15. I only have his Maybeck disc, but he was an impressive pianist. His father also passed away too soon, at the age 64. Both father and son seem underappreciated to me. Rest in peace, Mr. Drew, and thank you for the music.
  16. I've only heard John Blake on Tyrone Brown's Song of the Sun and Avery Sharpe's Legends and Mentors, but he was an excellent violinist. I'll have to check out the albums he did with McCoy Tyner. He must've been proud of Johnathan, who is one of the top young drummers on the scene. Rest in peace, Mr. Blake, and thank you for the music.
  17. Someone needs to snap up that Blakey album, which pairs a Blakey date featuring Joe Gordon with Gordon's first leader date, which features Blakey. Great stuff.
  18. I'm a regular attendee of the Detroit Jazz Fest and a frequent visitor of Detroit for other jazz concerts. I know that Detroit has been having some problems, but I've never had any kind of issue within the city. Detroit can be counted on to attract a diverse enthusiastic crowd. For me, if the festivals boasted equally attractive lineups, it'd come down to distance and the expense of hotel accommodations.
  19. Mosaic does sell partial sets and can provide a list of available discs upon request. I bought the last disc of the Bunny Berigan set before later finding the whole set. It's a nifty way to get some of an otherwise OOP set or part of a set that you want to try out. Bought yesterday: Danilo Perez - Motherland: I am a recent convert of the Wayne Shorter Quartet. I listened to this album twice in a row. Perez is joined by fellow WSQ members John Patitucci and Brian Blade, as well as Chris Potter, Diego Urcola, Antonio Sanchez, Regina Carter, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Claudia Acuna and others. Jeremy Steig - Howlin' for Judy: I'm only familiar with Steig by name (and 'Sure Shot'), so I'm looking forward to hearing this comp of the trio tracks from Legwork and Wayfaring Stranger. Ralph Towner - Time Line: I've only heard live Towner and Oregon recordings. David Murray - Fo Deuk Revue: A wide-ranging effort from Murray. Miles Davis - The Cellar Door Sessions 1970: I heard a track on the radio within the last year and loved it. I saw it in a shop for $55 yesterday. I found it online for $45, which is a steal. I can't wait to hear it.
