  1. just wanted to mention here that my two new books - God Didn't Like It, and Really the Blues - are now available as E books; I am bundling them with a link to Calibre, a very good E book reader application that installs quickly and easily and works well (though of course they can be read with any other program). the E book versions are $12.99 each; I accept paypal, credit card through paypal, personal check, cash, etc. (my paypal address is alowe5@maine.rr.com) - the blues books comes with access to over 800 full examples of the music, with more to come, there will be musical samples with the rock book in a few months.
  2. from his last session: https://soundcloud.com/allenlowe-1/im-an-old-regular-baptist-mp3
  3. well, hopefully Rouse is panned to one side so I can listen without him. His playing drives me crazy.
  4. glad Marty Krystall's name came up; best saxophonist on the planet and plays that bass clarinet thing; and check out Paul Austerlitz; on our New Tango CD he has a Dolphy-esque thing going on Bb clarinet, but he is quite brilliant on bass clarinet as well.
  5. Monk is probably not on the Christian, but he's on a bunch of Jerry Newman things that are incredibly fascinating - in Devilin Tune I excerpt some, I think.
  6. Jones/Baraka's whole dismissal of those Gil Evans' sponsored sessions is nothing short of disgusting; when I got to know Carisi, I thought about asking him about it, but decided better of it.
  7. I love Hodeir's music but his writing continues to enrage me; Jeff, if you want to have a coronorary, read Hodeir on Johnny Dodds; one of the most colossal critical misfires in jazz history,
  8. I NEED this one; oh, Bud......
  9. it's interesting to read Laurie Anderson's letter; heart felt, yet so strangely generic.
  10. interesing clip; Potter is a bit of a bore, but Kevin can play; somewhere I have some things we did together in a studio, maybe late 1980s, not sure; back then he had more of a Tristano-line thing going. It is interesting that he has lost a bit of his old intensity. Sometimes "maturity" is a mixed blessing.
  11. well, it's like the title of the new Les Baxter box: More of Les.
  12. that's is trop Legrand. If Google has served me correctly.
  13. I actually like it more intensely than when I was young; not to drop names, but once you've been either on a stage or in a recording studio with people like Julius Hemphill, Roswell Rudd, Gary Bartz, Ursula Oppens and Matt Shipp, it just makes you hungrier for more.
  14. it may be the result of my 17 years up here in the Gulag, but all I do is think about music; I listen to it, compose it constantly, and play whenever and wherever I can (which is few and far between, unfortunately).
  15. he's knowledgable; the Brown book was troubling. I do know from my experience on the old 78 list that he's one of those collectors with a bit of a chip on his shoulders about giving credit to White musicians; and I understand his feelings. But still, there's way to do it while giving a more balanced historical view, I think.
  16. I am a little wary of Ginell, who managed to write an entire bio of Milton Brown without once mentioning black musicians in any way, as an influence or parallel force to Western Swing; he also once got annoyed at me for suggesting that there was probably a lot of undocumented black music of the Southwesrt that had a powerful influence on white musicians. But most offensive is the Milton Brown book, which has literally no mention of African Americans.
  17. i can attest also that Giddins was completely serious in his question. Sad but true.
  18. Larry and I have the same friend, re: Giddins; one of Gary's problems is that he often tries to get technical but hasn't a clue (he used to say that You are Too Beautiful and I'll Keep Loving You were the same changes; not true; he also screwed up the definition of enharmonic).
  19. fasstrack - you probably knew Herman Foster; he's on a lot of her early '60s things, I think.
  20. maybe he meant that his digits were doing the playing.
  21. the idea of it being deliberate - and not mistaken identity - makes more sense, as Jaki, I am sure, did not look like this other party - though of course it hurts even more to think of it in this way and to picture this horrible way he died.
  22. they are a replacement for the last 3 boxes; they are only for streaming, but if you can figure a way to download, it's ok with me -
  23. the most credible thing I have heard is that Jaki was shot by someone who was looking for another member of Jaki's family, but got the wrong guy -
  24. a little blurry, but there it is - - next:
