he used to do a lot of things with Mark Dresser.

http://davebennett.com/ that's his web site. The Portland paper said today that he is better than Benny Goodman. To my ears, all he plays is pre-digested riffs. This is evil music. Give me Sol Yaged any day of the week.

btw, for the best insight into Jones/Baraka, read Hettie Jones book, "How I Became Hettie Jones." (she's his white ex-wife). Jones was also, in his early days, a good poet (I have one of his Evergreen Press collections around here somewhere), He's a smart guy, but to reiterate, he frequently lets his ideology beat reality, Blues people is a brilliant mess.

Blues People has many smart insights, but is so full of errors and distortions that I've never been able to get through it. Ideology frequent trumps reality in Baraka's work, now, for the inevitable question, "what errors and distortions" I have to, annoyingly I know, beg off for now (don't own the book anymore; couldn't stand reading it and having to stop so frequently to make mental corrections). But I would recommend that you look up Ralph Ellison' review of Blues People, which I believe is right on the money,

some of it's good - some of it's taken from Savoy reissues/airshots; the key is what they do to it, sonically. -

Charlie Parker Records 30CD set
AllenLowe replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
well, the Membrans that I've heard have that compressed distortion that comes when they wipe out the wave form above about, maybe, 8K. Also, that awful gurgle. I would love to have the CP records set, but I don't trust them yet. Especially since that Oscar Moore, IIRC, has the pianist Carl Perkins on it. -

I would be careful - the Membran blues thing I picked up (3 cds) was a complete botch - horrible use of noise reduction. Unlistenable. I would stay away from this unless I could sample it first. -

Newt Gingrich declared January - December to be Caucasian History Month. Helen Keller regained her sight. I was named Time's Man of the Year but declined the honor. -
btw, that was the Schaefer concert that Monk opened for Miles - I think it was '70, and it's in Robin Kelly's book. I was there and Monk was practically asleep at the piano.

1) Larry Kart was impregnated in a horrible science experiment got wrong - and had to get permission from Rick Santorum in order to put the baby up for adoption. 2) Jeff Crompton was blinded in a terrible science experiment accidental explosion. He lost three fingers from his left hand, one eye, and 6 toes from his left foot. Fortunately, all is ok because he is right-footed and can still play a bass drum. 3) this site was dissolved; Jim Alfredson, in a fit of late-night madness, told us all to go F ourselves and closed it down. Three days later he sold it to Google for $6 billion,
