  1. thank you - we finally have smoking gun proof that, as the Russians invented baseball, the Jews invented jazz. shalom. -Avram Lowe
  2. I know Vito Corigliano..... I used to like Balliett, but he doesn't age well, I think.....and I do not trust his interviews, entertaining as they are, there is just something very false about them, and apparently this has been confirmed by some of his subjects. Also, somewhere he called Miles Davis "a first rate second rate trumpeter." He also put down Jaki Byard once, which is (for me) and unforgivable sin; also I have found his descriptions of solos entertaining and colorful - but almost complete crap when one hears what he is writing about. Too many flights of fancy.
  3. well, I've done a recording with David Murray/Loren Schoenberg/Doc Cheatham (more than a pair, I know)
  4. sorry Jeff, I guess that weekend in Vegas didn't count...........
  5. actually, I find Jeff Crom to be a very USEFUL fag (not that there's anything wrong with that.......)
  6. I don't know - if I start running I may never stop -
  7. there are some very strange choices on those volumes. It's a good thing I've since stopped using amyl nitrate.
  8. what, only a few Cds? actually, IIRC, I consulted on that project a LONG time ago (well, maybe 5 years ago; could be longer) -
  9. here's a link for him: http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jul/30/opinion/la-ed-needles-20100730
  10. hows the transfers?
  11. well, it takes all kinds.....not all of us are as needle-conscious as you
  12. I assume we're talking about Gladys Hampton? In which case it should be called "Glad Hump." (I remember a story, can't remember who told me, about a musician in that band who kept giving Gladys what was supposed to be his union payments, which she then pocketed, he found out later).
  13. I would check Mix Magazine, which usually has a big services directory.
  14. Sister Morphine is my favorite.
  15. she's great - read the autobiography.
  16. it looks like the first section is a verse, maybe....
  17. Sir John used to play in NYC a lot in the 1970s and I got to know him pretty well, booked him on a few things, did one or two sessions with him on drums, I think. Fine fine player when he was on, when he was off he was off (smoked a little too much stuff); good guy. I lost track but heard he died.
  18. congrats Dave, and let me say, having heard David recite in Portland a few years back, what a fine poet he is.
  19. just found the radio interview with her from 1972: http://www.jazzage19...haw/bio/bio.php
  20. I have the X Series CEDAR de-clicker and have used this baby on all of my projects; works beautifully for Lps, 78s, even CDs with noisy material. But since my restoration days are fading (sort of easing out of the business) I want to sell this thing, which is a module, basically a rack unit that de-clicks in real-time; it also removes crackle, which is basically a lot of clicks together. Of the two units that are availble (de-crackle and de-click) I chose this one because, if you can only afford one, it is more versatile and effective, in my experience. here is the description from the CEDAR web site: "Scratches and clicks are encountered on all audio media - film, tape or disk, whether analogue or digital - so CEDAR's processes are invaluable when dealing with master tapes, film soundtracks, and videos as well as vintage recordings. The declick algorithm in the DCX offers a simplified user-interface with just one control, but will still remove up to 2500 scratches and clicks per channel per second. Developed from the CEDAR for Windows declicker, this advanced rackmount will clearly differentiate between the degradation and the genuine signal. Like all CEDAR products, it performs transparent restoration of even the most severely damaged material, while undamaged signal passes without any changes: there's no distortion, no loss of transients, and no loss of ambience." these things new are expensive, so, used they are not cheap either, though a lot cheaper than buying new - if you are interested (and at some point I will probably go to ebay if there is no response) email me at allenlowe5@gmail.com
  21. Freddie's a nice guy - when I was in Stockholm about 20 years ago I was staying at Keith Knox's and we called him up because I had been friends with the drummer Sir John Godfrey, for whom Redd wrote a song, "Sir John." Is he recording?
  22. "Ringo never did learn how to play a drum roll" - George Martin
  23. the most jazz-oriented British band leader in the rock-area was, IMO, Graham Bond. His bands were very interesting mixes of Ray Charles and Charles Mingus; nice rhythm section of Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. He was also, originally, a pretty good alto player.
  24. she was actually found and interviewed in NYC, and at one time it was posted on the internet, though I've been unable to find it - also, somewhere there are informal recordings she made iin the 1950s in which her voice sounds even better than it did in the 1930s.
  25. "unless they play it just too darn fast...."
