  1. somewhere I actually have a taped interview of Percy France in which he talks a fair amount about playing with bebop bands for dancing. Unfortunately I have no idea where this tape is. Still, Percy was quite convincing.
  2. hey, I remember the Songbird.
  3. oy veh
  4. amazing stuff - and a plastic reed.
  5. Jeff - I actually do not believe the story about Brenston's band, as the same thing has been told about 5 other guitar players, from Link Wray to Pat Hare. The problem is, if one makes a hole in a speakler cone, that, by itself, depending on location, does not necessarily present a distortion problem (I've got maybe 4 speakers with holes in 'em that play cleanly). And if the hole is made in a crucial place the sound is not aesthetically pleasing, not the kind of power-tube breakup that we admire - it's more just like a buzz. My take on the sound of that record is that it's classic overdrive.
  6. just cleaned out my mailbox - it was full - there has been a thread at the Blindman's Blues forum, buried amongst the 'shameless plugs' forum.
  7. I am told in December -
  8. while we're at it think about the growl of a saxophone, too - Pete Brown, Coleman Hawkins, Earl Bostic, etc.
  9. didn't know he had a club:
  10. now THAT I can understand - Shipp tells me that in person she's quite devastating -
  11. "Why the time lag? " they're building a new library, so the timing was good - and unlike a few other institutions I've talked to, they love LPs - which are being regularly rejected these days. Not a good thing.
  12. glad it made it there -
  13. what interests me more is that he has the right idea - and I'll tell you, as a singer of standards, he has a better understanding of the phraseology than Nora Jones, whom I heard recently singing "The Very Thought of You" on Garrison Keillor, and who had not a clue. how come we're not making fun of her? Is this some kind of anti-catcher thing?
  14. turns out I've got one more open-box of Really the Blues; everything is intact and minty. $40 plus shipping ($5 conus; about $15 to Europe) my paypal is alowe5@maine.rr.com
  15. Jack's right - they're playing a joke on the squares: "Look those dumbasses can't tell the difference"
  16. well, as I mentioned elsewhere, I'm getting rid of everything - and my wife is thrilled. Hopefully it'll all be at the New England Conservatory of Music in a few years.
  17. hmmmm.......that last warning is like a "Wet Paint" sign - now everybody's going to wanna check it out -
  18. if one wanted to pursue this I think one might find the origin of the kind of distortion we are talking about in African American vocalizing - check out some of the old Delta guys like Charlie Patton - and then early gospel, like Arizona Dranes and Bessie Johnson, also storefront gospel - the earliest recording I've heard, interestingly enough, with this sound, is from a Bob Wills broadcast with guitarist Junior Barnard, middle 1940s, maybe, and I can only assume that Barnard (a white guy and great jazz player) was probably reflecting what he heard around him in Texas - not to mention the limitation of low-power guitar amps.
  19. I don't know....all that hair just turns me on - it's kinda like having sex with Bigfoot. Here's a recent picture of my wife:
  20. thanks, yes, I have a good person to assess the collection - so it sounds like I can just give the number of items and the value - I will, however, do a little IRS reading.
  21. I am starting to organize, for the purposes of donation, my LP and CD collection, somewhere in the neighborhood of 5000 total pieces. I am going to get the collection assessed fairly. My question is - for the purposes of legal documentation to the IRS, is it necessary to list all items? Or is a generalized statement - like "2000 LPs, total value ____" sufficient? I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this.
  22. I just used this board to record a bunch of cuts on my next CD - liked it so much that I went out and purchased a Mackie 800R, which has 8 of these mic preamps, which Mackie calls "Onyx" and which, I can say from experience, rival much higher-priced preamps. The 1220 has 4 of these Onyx's, plus 4 other line-level inputs. Plenty of routing, excellent sound, but I don't need it because of the 800R. Also has what Mackie calls a "Perkins EQ" but I don't know much about it except they think it's hot stuff, and it does sound good. if you are looking to get a "pro" sound, nothing rivals this in its price range (look online for pics; I believe it can also be fitted with a firewire card) - it can also be used for live sound applications. $200 plus shipping conus. my paypal is alowe5@maine.rr.com
  23. Chapin was too busy on the horn, but he played well. Nice guy, too. Just not in the upper echelons.
