  1. hope your invited - he told me he hates surprise guests -
  2. with Peterson, I always worry that my turntable is spinning too fast -
  3. haven't read the book - so will withhold judgement - I didn't say I agreed with him about Kind of Blue - just that I think he's a smart guy who doesn't just say things to shake things up - it's like any critic with whom I have a serious disagreement - I am most concerned about the honesty of the critique, even if it comes out on a different side than the one I'm on - (though since I may be an idiot - see other thread - please take my opinions with caution)
  4. sorry, last 30 years, Sonny can't touch him - just my opinion -
  5. are you sure that's not Don King?
  6. technically a riff is a short motif of a rhythmic nature - let me add that you have to speak to people who heard it closer to its issue date - I first heard it in 1968, and it came to me as just another Miles recording, but it was clearly a major and important work - not iconic, yet, not legendary, just a beautifully written and performed date.
  7. the Roost stuff is scary, though interestingly his ballad playing is still somewhat undeveloped - sounds better on the Blue Notes - there is an early version of Somebody Loves Me on the Roosts (I think) that I have a feeling is probably the closest thing to hearing what he sounded like in person back then -
  8. some good ones, some bad ones, some strange ones - " why do most jazz fans dislike him." not sure if this can accurately be said of the most successful jazz musician of the last 50 years -
  9. sorry, been busy - promise I will look tomorrow -
  10. maybe his best studio album -
  11. and we all know that Wynton loves rock and roll - and Chris -
  12. any relation to Bruce Lee?
  13. as some of you know I am working on a film and have alreday interviewed some cultural dignitaries including our own Chris Albertson, Roswell Rudd, Matt Shipp, our own David Beardsley, Jonathon Lethem, Ethan Iverson - well I have an appointment on October 14 to interview Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center; should be interesting and I will be on my best manners. Keeping this civil (wasn't easy getting this interview and I don't want someone from Lincoln Center seeing someone saying something bad and canceling it) - just thought I'd open the floor for questions - REAL questions, not, "what is your favorite color?" though of course if there is enough demand I will ask that -
  14. that's my kind of woman -

  16. calling Larry Kart - Larry, don't know if you saw my email or my prior posts here - but the loss of the 1928-32 Brunswick masters is historically catastrophic - I tried to post about that on the OTHER group you referred to but my post was rejected - but I repeat, this is awful news, as the Brunswick label of those years encompassed blues, songsters, jazz (incl. Duke and Jabbo Smith) and country/hillbilly of the most beautiful kind -
  17. next -
  18. it's not "needs based," however, this is still the real world - and yes, Roswell would be a perfect choice - as would Randy Sandke, Matt Shipp, and more than a few others - Matt, in particular, would be a good and creative choice because he is so amazingly independent -
  19. I'll pass -
  20. never saw any - yeah, Nat doesn't return calls unless there's something in it for him - ego massage or money -
  21. and he was a Commie - later moved to Boston to be a painter and died young -
  22. Bill - thanks for the reminder of Jabbo Smith, whom I used to see in NYC in the 1970s - as a matter of fact, in the 1980s I used to play a version of Weird and Blue with Randy Sandke -
