  1. yas I say
  2. every time this thread re-appears I think of my days as a rehearsal pianist at San Quentin -
  3. yes, he worked for Alan Lomax for quite a few years; as a matter of fact I once went to see Ros at Lomax's office, which as I recall was in a real bad neighborhood (8th avenue, maybe) near one of the Tunnels - there was a drug deal going on outside the door. I met Lomax only briefly, but that was ROs's bread and butter for some time -
  4. thanks, but even better, I will add, is his playing on a thing we recorded called American SOng Project - we did tunes based on Tea for Two and Body and Soul; also did Dizzy Atmosphere - Ros was beyond belief -
  5. yeah that must be it -
  6. well, I'm full of something - ask JSangry - and I have tried to appreciate Rouse over the years - even heard him in a small club with my friend Neloms, probably around 1980 or so (could be wrong about the date) - it was the Angry Squire, 23rd Street - and I tell you, it was interesting but telling; Rouse was a bit detached from the band, and they were clearly surprised at his reputation - played well, but nothing that really got inside the music -
  7. and don't forget that Tokyo is 15 hours ahead of us - so, given the space/time continuum, it's gonna take that much longer. Also, the dollar will be 15 hours weaker, and the head of the Tokyo tech department will be 15 hours older and possibly dead -
  8. I actually was very taken aback, but he was very nice; I mumbled "I'm a friend of Chuck Nessa," thinking it was kind of like a talisman; unfortunately, at first he couldn't place the name-
  9. interesting arrangement because it veers between the very generic/conventional and the slightly personal and very warm -
  10. I told this story in another thread that died - I recently called Columbia University jazz studies and I got some clueless kid on the phone; he said "hold please" and about a minute later someone else picked up and said "this is George Lewis." I introduced myself and I expected him to say "aren't you that asshole who's been criticizing my book?"
  11. not to worry, Chris, didn't mean to step on that story - I was on a roll last night - haven't looked at these pics in over 20 years - by the way, also found some fliers with Al Haig/Ben Brown listed - will try to post tonight -
  12. my old friend, last pianist in Mingus's band, Bob Neloms and family in New Haven, ca. 19877 -
  13. the "live" stuff in the movie Straight No CHaser is my favorite -
  14. he does have an older-model car which appears to have been retro-fit for intergalactic travel (took me for a ride last year) -
  15. don't worry, I just finished a 50,000 word history of rock and roll and I never heard of that song -
  16. smart fellow, Ros - genius musician, great guy -
  17. a great saxophonist, difficult guy (I took this at the West End Cafe, ca. 1978): Harold Ashby:
  18. wow wow wow gog did did
  19. two smart fellows, THEY felt smart -
  20. I always like him best in a trio, except for the Trane stuff - even when it's Griffin or Rollins - for me it's gotta be with Trane or a trio - and I find Rouse unlistenable, I'm sorry to say - his playing just sits there; sounds like someone playing at playing, to paraphrase Martin Williams (in a different context) -
  21. last for now - student strike, Massapequa High School, 1970 (following Kent State); that's me lower left:
  22. Art Pepper on Boston, maybe 1975 - we spent an interesting day together:
  23. Schildkraut family at home, 1977: son Stanley, wife Gloria, Davey, son Allen:
  24. letter from Barry Harris before his first big concert at Symphony SPace:
  25. Pic I took of Duke Jordan, Carnegie Recital Hall, maybe 1975:
