  5. after much procrastination I have pics scanned - first off, this is me, circa 1980, playing Bill Evans Rhodes- yes, THAT Rhodes - at his wife Nan's house in Branford Connecticut (she offered to sell me that piano when he died but to my regret I could not scrape up enoough cash) -
  6. one smart fellow, he felt smart -
  7. if you find a reliable dealer - and I know three in particular - you can get solid used old American 12ax7s - the key is to buy from a dealer who has a good tester that show emissions as well as general strength - usually a Hickock or B&K -
  8. I've been buying tubes for about 5 years now and I'm swimming in the things: mostly 6v6s, 6L6s, 12ax7s, 5v4, 5y3, 5u4 - one of the few things did right in my life was to start buying old tubes when they were still affordable - the difference in a tube amp is substantial, though there are finally a few new production tubes that make the great - primarily Tad 6v6s and 6L6s - still, a a lot the old stuff is affordable on ebay (Mullards NOT included) bt you do fine with GE, Sylvania, Raytheon, Scott - it's a brave old tube world out there - just got an amp with 6sl7s and 6sn7s so that's my latest obsession -
  9. just held up the 7-11 so gas was free - sorry, gotta go -
  10. she's one of my favorites, especially on the stuff with Ladnier -
  11. somewhere I have an LP (maybe Getz) with a picture of the group, including Williams, on the cover - most striking thing was how much he looked like Al Haig -
  12. I can walk anywhere in South Portland, Maine, with safety - all I want to do, however, is walk away -
  13. sorry I've been remiss, but promise to post photos this weekend -
  14. best of all was "Jazz Goes to Rehab" -
  15. not to change the subject, but has anyone else noticed how much the Thornhill vocalist Gene Williams sounds like Harry Connick on "Sorta Kinda?" It's very strange -
  16. those damned Bernsteins -
  17. gotta be one of the worst album covers I've ever seen -
  18. didn't know that - stranger than fiction - of course, Henny Youngman (who, no kidding, had a brother named Lester) wrote "Take My Wife - Please"
  19. well, there's the unreleased Take Six - and than Take Seven - followed by Take Eight, Take Nine, and Take 10 - fortunately he stopped after that -
  20. he's getting teste -
  21. is there any extant video of this? haven't checked youtube -
  22. she's Michael Mantler's kid, too, I believe - and he's one weird nasty guy - I met him in Denmark some years ago and told him I knew Roswell Rudd, figuring they were old cronies - he said to me (and I quote exactly): "Now why the hell would I care about Roswell Rudd?" charming guy - no wonder Carla fell in love with him- I never had the heart to tell Ros about this strange encounter -
  23. I had a similar problem to that dancer once - I was crossing the Israeli border but I was going into Egypt; they thought I might be Jewish so they said to me, "do that Jewish thing you do. Be charming; be funny." ****** *****adapted from a Lenny Bruce routine about Jews building the Pyramids: "They built the whole thing than they looked at it and said "veh! we forgot the windows!"
