  1. "certainly not as arousing as the Village Vanguard live trios or some of the RCA stuff, but still - I would buy it. " I don't know about you guys but I get hot just THINKING about Sonny Rollins -
  2. well, I'll tell you, one night at Gregory's Al Haig and Chuck Wayne almost came to blows over the chord changes to some tune -Haig was annoyed because he thought Wayne was usurping his leadership of the trio, Wayne got REALLY pissed, and walked out - never saw him again - some people will die for the right changes -
  3. sorry I over-reacted - just trying to protect you from Stanley Crouch - and everybody knows he hates puppies -
  4. I was astounded to see this listed as inessential: Louis Armstrong--Swing That Music (1936-38, MCA) this perod is one of the greatest for Armstrong - as a matter of fact, the liner notes on this issue (by Dan Morgenstern) almost single-handedly led to a re-evaluation of this whole era for Armssttrong - and the music is superlative - IGNORE THIS LIST (or I will kill another puppy)
  5. "And that is George Anthiel, of course." actually it was Duke Ellington -
  6. puppy-killing jokes always get a laugh -
  7. but he's just so damned evil -
  8. just got paid, so promise will do same - I always like to patronise a jazz musician -
  9. these kind of topics tire me, not that they are unimportant, just that I've been fighting this battle for too many years - as for artists who are not nice people, Henry Miller said it best, if I can pararphrase him correctly; his idea was that artistic expression represented the best part of many who were otherwise not nice people. This fits many a jazz musician who had one problem or another - 1) Bill Evans was a classic narcissist (hope I'm spelling that right)- 2) Ben Webster beat up women 3) Max Roach beat up Abbey Lincoln and was feared by many a musician in the 1940s's-50s for his tendency to violence 4) ------ (you fill in the name; I'm afraid of lawsuits and/or of being murdered by said musician) was said by a VERY FAMOUS avant gradist to be "likely to kill everyone in the room." (a conversation I had last year) 5) Bud Powell could barely function outside of music ("In everything else," Walter Bishop said to me, "he was an infant.") 6) and yes, Al Haig, who was a close friend, likely raped his first wife, and did violence to his second - 7) Jim Alfredson insists on calling a G minor seventh flat 5 chord a G half diminished - 8) Chauncey Morehouse, above, called somebody here a bad name - 9) I once murdered a puppy (sorry, I'm just tired of being called a Jew-boy by cute furry animals))
  10. there's also an interesting account of Waters in one of Zora Neale Hurston's books (sorry but I can't think of the title now) - but she comes across as amazingly independent of white folks, as defiant and outspoken - also one of my favorite singers -
  11. Jack Bailey! pomp and circumstance! one of my favorites -
  12. pizza in New Haven? Sounds good - what is your slave name?
  13. yes, Ellen Rowe, whom I alsp worked with a few times, is a fine musician - used to confuse people - Allen Lowe and Ellen Rowe -
  14. I did a few things with Ellen at a conference in Burlington, sometime maybe in the early 1990s - we were introduced by the late great pianist Andy Shapiro (the greatest synth player ever, I kid you not; he died of a brain tumor about 10 years ago) -
  15. how about my social security number, bank account number, and ATM pin?
  16. allright, so what the hell am I talking about? finally bought a video camera - a nice high-definition Canon - and am now venturing into the realm of film making - about what? you ask - well, it's a free-form autobiographical tale about a guy who runs away and joins the circus and marries the half-man/half woman and then together they have little half-boy/half girl children - nah, too complicated. truth is, it's about the making of music, though that's all I can really say at this moment - so what's my point? I am looking for clips (video or film), and though I know it's unlikely, I was wondering if anybody here has any film/video, to which they own the rights, of: 1) Julius Hemphill 2) Roswell Rudd 3) Barry Harris 4) Al Haig 5)Doc Cheatham 6) Jaki Byard or any other musicians I have knowm like Joe Albany, Dickey Wells - I know this is tricky territory, as rights are important, as in who-owns them? so let me know, as I pursue other avenues - tell me here or email me at alowe5@maine.rr.com or call me at 207-899-2669 or charge my Visa Card: 7785 2222 6598 exp. 06/12
  17. still got 'em - you guys are gonna force me to do ebay -
  18. why coitenly
  19. if you want a little entertainment, ask Ellen Powell about Sheila jordan - (a recurring problem with vocalists; they seem overly defensive sometimes, that they are not always technically knoweldgeable; hence they tend to engage in pre-emptive abuse)
  20. isn't the title of this topic something of an oxymoron?
  21. Ellen Powel is a great player - Carmen Lundy, IMHO, could have been one of the real vocal stars of the music - BUT - let us just saythat there were attitude issues (I briefly worked for her doing some booking in NYC in the 1970s; suffice to say that she still owes me money) -
