  1. and sorry to keep doing this, but I have to get my numbers back up - even if it does crash the server again - but damn, I'll never catch up to Sangrey -
  2. hey, I was so bored I started posted on the Steve Hoffman forum - and those guys are REALLY psycho -
  3. and let us not forget the immortal Chewy, heir to the ARICEFFRON archive -
  4. though I do weep to think of the great pearls of wisdom that have emanated from my typewriter that are now lost for future generations -
  5. hey, just do like I do - I post regularly, but I never put any thought into it - (long pause to allow wise cracks)
  6. is this just some scheme to make us all donate?
  7. do what Mingus did - hire a sideman to write it out and than punch him in the mouth when he complains - unless he's a guitar player -in that case break his fingers -
  8. "I've noticed a few Proper cd doing that" actually, with Proper, that's just the way they sound -
  9. not so sure - I'll bet he was just as obnoxious when he was 12 years old - I mean, that crap about "I don't do second takes" - give me a break - if I had been the leader I would have fired him on the spot and refused to pay - no kidding - guys like him get away with that shi* because everybody's afraid to stand up to them -
  10. Ron Carter? I thought we were talking about the Magna Carta -
  11. "I'm not sure I understand, are you trying to say he's a jerk or something? What exactly are you getting at?" sorry, my mistake; I thought we were talking about Jimmy Carter -
  12. didn't say he wasn't a good bass player - just wanted to point out that he was a jerk. And there is a difference between self-confident assertion and jerkiness. I believe Carter has achieved jerk-vana. He is a paragaon of jerki-ousity. He is a jerk, therefore he is. He is jerk-iferous. He is a follower of swami jerkianandawanda. He needs to go cold jerk-y. he is not a cool jerk. he is just a jerk - disclaimer: the above does not reflect the opinion of Organissimo or any official organ of the world of jazz and it's affiliates. It is simply one man's opinion. Void where prohibited. Any local laws and jusrisdictions may apply. Do not read while operating heavy machinery. Out of town, call collect.
  13. and vice versa - sorry, the guy is annoying. Recently he did a blindfold test (not sure if it was Jazz Times or Downbeat) and put everybody down. A jerk is a jerk - I'm not even that crazy about his bass playing - to quote an old pianist friend who worked with everybody, from Tony Scott to Kenny Dorham to Roy Eldridge, "I'm a little tired of Ron Carter and his booming bass."
  14. I think the rhythm section is great, drummer knows what to do behind both tenor payers, Hamilton plays very well, Wayne is great (nice subtle reference to Trane somewhere about 4: 45 - one of the tunes he plays with Duke on the Impulse sessions) -
  15. it's good, but it's no Litchfield Jazz Fest -
  16. I spent a strange afternoon with him some time around 1975 - scary guy, Jim Jones-type -
  17. don't know if this has been covered, but I bought and am reading Eunmi Shim's new book on Tristano; unlike, say, 98 percent of the books I read on jazz (academic or otherwise) I can highly recommend it; well written, carefully researched, intelligent analysis, pretty colors on the cover. Get it -
  18. glad Larry mentioned Lizbeth Scott - to me she's the other sex symbol of the 1950s - along with Gloria Graham. And I believe she's in one of those Elvis movies. As for Bob The Gambler, don't want to start a fight, but for me that represents the unfortunate formalist side of film making and cineastes - beautiful construction, technical virtuosity, bad script (yeah, there he goes folks, riding that issue - formalism - again). And I recall Richard Gilman's line about much of the academic writing on the new cinema and the whole cine/arts movement of the 1960s - he said a lot of it sounded like Sam Goldwyn trying to talk his way in to see Immanuel Kant. As for me, I love Rules of the Game, though it probably does not qualify as noir -
  19. it will never go out of print -as a matter of fact I just sold the rights to Concord - they're gonna hold it at Iron Mountain for me -
  20. hey, guys, you just don't understand - there's nothing like a good pair of pants. As you get older certain parts of the body require more specific contours and support - and you cannot put a price on that - but if you HAD to, I would say $67 million is pretty close - personally I would settle for $5 million and free dry cleaning for life -
  21. will do - feel free to add sound files if you like - did I send you the CD Jews in Hell? there are also sound files on the site, but I don't know if they are transferable -
  22. also - Key Largo - with Bogart, Bacall, Edward G Robsinon, Lionel Barrymore - so good someone else wrote a song about it. I think John Huston directed -
  23. some more nominations: In a Lonely Place (Bogart and Gloria Graham) - so good I wrote a song about it - The Big Heat (Fritz Lang directed; Lee Marvin, Glenn Ford, Marlon Brando's sister Jocelyn - she gets blown up in a car bomb meant for Ford - and Claire Trevor. Marvin throws a pot of hot cofee in Gloria Graham's face) - Gloria Graham is one of the sexiest women in the movies -
  24. am I remembering correctly, or was that not the one with Hoagy Carmichael (Hong Kong Blues)? also, of course, Walter Brennan, Bacall, Boagart...
  25. hi Flurin - 1) love the site - if you're so inclined, my web site is finally operative - thanks to the incredible work of Nick Schweitzer, who is on this forum - www.allenlowe.com feel free to set up a link - 2) a bit ot, but I owe you Volume 1 of Devilin Tune - I just got it back in stock and will send by the weekend -
