grab anything you can by Dick Katz. Wonderful man. Lewis was something of a mentor to Katz, though there are some funny stories about later tensions.

Grex (Karl Evangelista) East Coast Tour, 7-16/25
AllenLowe replied to ep1str0phy's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
reporting back, as ordered by Chuck - heard Grex last night in Brooklyn - LOVE this band. Grex is one of the few performances I've seen of late with such a powerful life-force; everything goes into the music, it is energy without wasted effort; lots of brains AND brawn. Wonderful trio, perfect rhythm section, and Karl has both taste and technique. This is a true fusion band - meaning it fuses so many good ideas together into a very original kind of post-rock song form, and it performs as one very unified entity. Go see it when you can; I plan on using them on a recording if we can get it together. -

that's an oldie; I'm glad you reminded me, as I put a copy aside for you. -
I do think this is a major work.

I think there is an LP of Webster with Rowles from that period, 'live'; might be on the Honey Dew label, not sure.

"Charles McPherson's Post-Bird Bop"
AllenLowe replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I assume you mean McPherson, not A.T. I agree - at McPherson's best I have heard a wonderful, free and boppish approach that hits great intensity. The first I heard him was on the Xanadu LPs, which put me off a little and which I now realize were not his best work. There is some great stuff from live Mingus sessions that really show what he can do. Interestingly, Don Schiliten complained to me once how badly the McPhereson Xanadus sold, but I really think it may have had to do with how held-back he sounds on those. as for A.T. - I think he had moments of greatness. But radically adjusting the tempo - as I have heard him do on at least 2 recorded pieces, one with Wallington, another with Trane - is really a near-fatal flaw for me when it comes to drummers. -
"Charles McPherson's Post-Bird Bop"

I talked to Ortega about a year ago; nice, nice man; said he still plays. -
as Dan knows I am a big fan of the early Memphis, proto-rockabilly recordings with Pat Hare. I love all the periods of his work, but there is something strange and very new about the Memphis days. And there's a whole rhythm thing which clearly had a big effect on Elvis.

a very important, if oblique, personal influence. In a very brief conversation, when I was about 15, Haden pretty much taught me how to improvise. Like a lot of musicians he was, apparently, of multiple personalities and moods. Fortunately I never got anywhere near enough to him to be effected.

I am in the middle of a large transfer-to-digital thing, and selling a fair amount of LPs that have been moved over; these tend to be important for sonic qualities; reasonably priced, I think, as well. Making room for old age. 1)History of Jazz PIano RCA Black and White series, 3 LPs boxed; James P. , Morton, Waller, Errol Garner, Basies, Newborn, some Bud, Duke, Hines, Tatum, ML Williams. $6 plus shipping (M) 2) Solo Flight: Genius of Charlie Christian - THIS is a 2 LP Columbia gatefold, and the only way you will get his live Minnesota recordings in un-botched sound. $6 plus shipping (M-) 3) Something New Something Blue Columbia Original stereo $8 plus shipping (M-) 4) 10 Years of Black Country Religion black label Yazoo, $20 plus shipping (M-) 5) Mama Let Me Lay It On You (reissued Yazoo) $10 plus shipping (M-) 6) Henry Red Allen with JC Higginbotham and Edmond Hall terrific live shots from '41 and '46 $6 plus shipping (m) 7) Randy Weston Blues Trip LP with Ray Copeland and Frank Haynes. $6 plus shipping (M-) 8) Shades of Bix: Jimmy McPartland and Bobby Hackett 2 lp gatefold. part of Leonard Feather series. great '50 stuff. $7 plus shipping (M) 9) The World of Duke Ellington V. 2 Columbia gatefold, great stuff, '49-'51. $8 plus shipping, (M) 10) Anita O'Day 1949-1950 Rare Tono LP. $8 plus shipping (M) 11) Dave Bartholomew Jump Children Imperial Reissue. Concord Music Buys Catalog of Vee-Jay Records
AllenLowe replied to bluesoul's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I wonder if they'll surprise everyone and actually pay the families, since no one got paid originally. Vee-Jay was terrible. and few people know this, but Vijay Iyer's parents named him after the label. -
I guess I am registered there; just logged in.
-
and next comes Flying F--k. sorry, could not resist.
-
not defendng what they did, but ACE generally does a terrific job, sound-wise; in that respect it's one of the best labels in the business.
