  1. he is currently serving 327 months in prison for not just child porn but for participating in a ring which coerced and manipulated children into participating.
  2. from Amazon: "Has established a new standard against which all future jazz biographies must be judged." - Bill Barton, Signal To Noise; San Quentin
  3. I just noticed that on Amazon and in the web site reviews of Rat Race Blues: The Musical Life of Gigi Gryce, there is a blurb from..... Bill Barton. I wrote an email to them suggesting they remove it, but so far, nothing. Can it be a different Bill Barton?
  4. the Chambers book, which I read recently, is very good.
  5. they're looking for a new drummer.
  6. good question; my judgement is based on random listening, so I'm not really sure.
  7. this is one of those groups I keep trying to like; too many people seem to like them for there to be so little there there, so I listen...and listen... to me it's a failure of form and composition. Good players, bad ideas. very bloodless.
  8. well, from what we can see and hear, it had a powerful effect on jazz in the immediate aftermath - it seemed everybody was trying to write a tune that sounded like something from KOB. This in itself had major impact and significance,
  9. they may be reading this site and hustling to fix the problem. nah, probably not.

    Jack Bruce

I don't think anyone has mentioned, btw, how important another early group he was in was - Graham Bond's Organization, I think it was, and it was also originally with Ginger Baker on drums (and apparently they fought, physically, all the time). Bond was an interesting guy, great bandleader, and also a pretty good saxophonist originally.
  11. actually sngs more in tune than most of the 'jazz' singers I hear these days.
  12. the book is brilliant, I think; haven't seen the movie (don't think I can take it), but the TImes review was very dumb, I thought. Clearly by someone who had not a clue about Joe or what he did.
  13. but since we've never seen them, we'll never know.
  14. I had a big order that didn't happen and so I don't need this many - they are still sealed, 3 packs of $50; I paid $10 for each pack, will sell for $6 each pack plus $12 shipping in the USA - $30 for the whole thing - perfer to sell 'em all at once - my paypal is alowe5@maine.rr.com email me at allenlowe5@gmail.com
  15. I think we should merge the grumpy old men and create a hybrid of cranky old farts. Feel free to use any of my own body parts as necessary. I believe that this will result in a super race of intellectual aging observers.
  16. I like my VPI TNT Junior. But I would also like one of those turntables mentioned, above, that runs backwards. That's how you get the secret message.
  17. it's ok to listen to Dexter at work, as long as you are not operating heavy machinery.
  18. people keep saying that the fact that other people are talking about this album shows that it was an important thing to do, and proves that it is art - but, you know, I'm always talking about my rash, and that doesn't make it art; unless someone here starts talking about it too, I guess. but the truth is that this band has never been more than a musical gimmick, so this project is consistent with their past accomplishments.
  19. just got the Bradord; wow. Almost forgot how great he is. And the whole session is terrific.
  20. been busy listening to my various DIals; including boots, stuff from odd Euro lables, Fresh sound, etc. Will Probably stick with what I got until I can hear something actually issued. I hate to deal with returns. The Sonny Berman stuff is some of my favorites, too. Will have to see.
  21. he is a great drummer.
  22. to me her playing has the same deficits Dave Brubeck's piano playing has - it's like she never gets to the center of whatever idea she is implying; like, as I once said about ol' Dave, someone who keeps shuffling the cards but never gets around to playing the game. And a lot seem like recycled ideas, as in that clip above. Some nice writing (yes again like Dave), as at 33:40+, and Tim Berne is one of my favorites; but she, sincere as she is, just never does anything as an improviser. And I get tired of waiting. ....wait.....she wakes up a bit at about 38:00; seems to be channeling some Warne Marsh, which is a good thing, I like her sound there and now I am happy...I like 41:33; but she seems to have trouble sustaining her ideas....I don't know....frustrating music. Nice unison at 42:34.
  23. 1) Larry: Different strokes................... 2) I hate this group; all gimmick and surface; I call them Other People Do the Playing (which I think may be the title of my next cd)
  24. my socks are still on.
