  1. I seem to recall e-mailing the publisher six months or so ago and never getting a reply re: a 5th edition.

  3. What a lame assed attempt at credibility. "Hey, let's put on a show! We can play earlier music AND be praised for knowing it is worthwhile! Just like the classical guys did with music before there were recordings of the originators. I bet we can make more money than the real artists." ← Well, obviously there are lots of things that call themselves "Love Supreme" (some good, most probably not-so-good). But after listening to Branford Marsalis' CD and watching the first half hour of live concert footage of the two-hour DVD, I'd have to say that Marsalis, "Tain" Watts, and pianist Joey Calderazzo deserve kudos for their work. I can't say I worship or even "get" a lot of Coltrane's work, and I'm not overly fond of everything Marsalis, but I don't write off what Branford has done as unworthy of praise or lacking in credibility.
  4. I hope you'll pardon my ignorance and my lateness in getting involved in this thread, but...how much of the J.J. Johnson set is otherwise unavailable on CD and how much is otherwise readily available?? Thanks!
  5. Dare I ask what you folks think of Branford Marsalis' DVD/CD combo of this same title ("Coltrane's a Love Supreme")?
  6. Yep--Jazzbo's right, I'm pretty sure.. Check out the soundtrack to the film "New Orleans." Clips at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=music&n=507846 . In fact, you can buy a poster from the movie that shows Satchmo and Billie performing together.
  7. I hear he's not really a doctor, and the turban is just for show. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
  8. I just saw Joshua last night with the San Francisco Jazz Cooperative. I had seen him a couple times previously and really like most of his music. There was one near-religious experience where I caught him at the Monterey Jazz Festival a few years ago. As the leader of SF Jazz, he let the other musicians (and some damn fine musicians they are--N. Payton, R. Rosnes,...!) take most of the solos. They did about half Coltrane & half originals. I liked some of the tunes but certainly not all.
  9. I saw Benny a couple years ago in Carmel, CA, and echo the sentiments about his performances being long & very entertaining (including the stories). The show I was at included a presentation to Golson of some kind of Congressional award/honor. Clifford Brown's widow and son were in the audience & got up to speak briefly. What do you folks think about his "Terminal 1" CD? I was a little disappointed in my first listen. I just got done with a weekend-long Dixieland jazz festival in Monterey. There was some damn good music there--too bad most of the jazz community under 60 years of age doesn't seem to support these kinds of events.
  10. Yeah--he's still pretty good! I made a special effort to attend one of his performances last June at NY City's Iridium, with group leader Joe Lovano, George Mraz, and Paul Motian, even though I find Lovano's choice of material to be frequently dull. It was worth it to see Jones. Too bad that Elvin couldn't be here, too. (I was lucky enough to see him & his Drum Machine band about four years ago--you talk about an older guy who was still near the top of his game!)

  12. I love both jazz & folk. It's all "roots" music. To paraphrase Louis Armstrong: All music is folk music. Horses don't sing.
  13. I've been to *lots* of outstanding jazz & rock concerts, with Springsteen, the Who, Neil Young, and Dave Brubeck being among the best. But none of them could match the performance by Michelle Shocked and her band at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz, CA in August, 2002. The combination of instrumentation, stage presence, songs I recxognized and could have sung along with, surprises, length of show, and effort expended by the performers were top notch.
  14. A few weeks ago, I played "Dreamland" for the first time in years. Pretty damn impressive!
  15. Well, the Cannonball/Evans "Know What I Mean" album has got to be up there in the worst/most bizarre category.
  16. My *personal* favorites (some past their prime) whose *live performances* I've attended would probably be: Oscar Peterson Dave Brubeck Anthony Wonsey Jessica Williams Cyrus Chestnut Wonsey is a real treat, if you get a chance to attend one of his performances. Honorable mentions: Hank Jones, Cedar Walton Of those on my live performance *wish list*, I'd love to see Horace Silver & Chucho Valdes.
  17. That's a great link! Thanks for posting. By the way--for those of you with accounts at libraries that subscribe to the ProQuest database, you might have access to Down Beat articles dating from 1988 to the present.
  18. On the subject of old Downbeat magazines: Downbeat had an exhibit at the 2004 Monterey Jazz Fest, featuring reproductions of old covers, articles, etc. I told one of their reps that I would be first in line if they sold a CD-ROM product containing PDFs of the entire Downbeat archive. Is there interest among you folks in such a product? If so, we should deluge the editors or publishers with requests for this.
  19. I do keep mine in jewel cases vertically... but why is it preferred???? I never heard that before???? Trane--I don't recall specifically why vertical alignment is preferable to horizontal. I get this monthly e-mail newsletter ("Cites & Bytes" or something like that) about library and data storage/retrieval issues, and I think it was in there that I read this. As I recall, it had something to do with the ink on the CD surface/label. But my neurons might be misfiring a little on this one. The other thing I was wondering about--can CDs "warp" the way vinyl does if stored improperly. Inquiring (paranoid?) minds want to know.
  20. I think we can agree to agree that some threads, no matter how well conceived, reach a point where they deserve to be put out of their misery. Like the one that gets taken over by two knuckleheads (and I use the term fondly--hah!), rather than discussing the suggested issue, begin arguing over who is more "I" (self)-centered.
  21. I keep thinking RED RODNEY would be a great candidate for a biography/biopic. But if I write it, will anyone buy a copy?
  22. Thanks to those who posted the Can-Am info--I'll have to check that out more closely, since I have a hodge-podge of units that store anywhere from about 50 to over 600 CDs. Quick question for you long-time CD collectors--I've always heard that CDs should be stored vertically (i.e., on edge), rather than horizontally (lying flat). Since I have a couple of storage units/towers that store them horizontally (in their jewel cases), I'm wondering if anyone has had problems with CDs being damaged due to storing them in this manner.
  23. I knew zilch/nada/nuttin' about Swedish jazz when I went to the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) conference in Long Beach, CA, earlier this month, but there were probably thousands of "Swedish Jazz: Live from the Swedish Jazz Celebration 2004" promotional CD samplers (as well as lots of other great freebies) available for the taking. I'm sorry I didn't pick up enough for everyone in this forum--it's got some great music on it! Scandanavia was well-represented in the exhibits area. Check out http://www.mic.stim.se/ and www.jazzfacts.com for more on Swedish jazz.
  24. My cousin in Pittsburgh had the following suggestions: quote: We don't have a truly legendary jazz record store in Pittsburgh, but here are three best bets: Jerry's Records 2136 Murray Ave, Squirrel Hill Vinyl heaven 412-421-4533 Paul's Compact Discs 4526 Liberty Ave, Bloomfield Small but well-stocked 412-621-3256 Stedeford's 417 E Ohio St, North Side Good funk-oriented selection 412-321-8333 And if you're looking for that hard-to-find recording, outside of town is Record Rama Sound Archives, a music store claiming over 2 million music recordings in stock. Record Rama Sound Archives 1130 Perry Highway (Route 19 North) Pines Plaza Shopping Center 412-367-7330 Pittsburgh is a tricky town to navigate, so be sure to look at MapQuest and bring a good road map. Good luck!
  25. I like what I've experienced with CDBaby--a very well-run outfit. The Arlington Houston Band (performed at California's 2004 "Jazz on the [Russian] River" festival, Danny Caron (great blues/jazz guitarist who has played with Charles Brown and at the 2004 Monterey Jazz Festival), and maybe Oskar Saville [did vocals for 10,000 Maniacs--post N. Merchant] are all good purchases.
